Taken from Ozzy's Tremulous For Dummies guide, since I feel too lazy to type it out myself:
AHH, THE PRETTY COLORS
If you are new to Tremulous, the first thing you see about many of the veteran players is that they have colors in their names. Its really not all that difficult, and its not a hack.
Its like this, The Carot key (shift + 6, or ^) is used to assign colors.
You type the carot, then a number. Each color is assingned to a specific number.
When you type the carot, you will see this say:^
but when you type the number, both the carot and the number will be hidden, and you will be left with a cursor with the color that you have chosen.
For example: if you typed ^1Hello, you would not see the ^1, you would only see Hello
1=red
2=green
3=yellow
4=Blue
5=Cyan
6=Purple
7=White
8=black
Refrain from using black text, as it is hard to read, and impossible to read in the console.
It's also a bit less painful if you do "\name [whatever]" in the console instead of fiddling with the options menu, methinks.
We should have a bigger search button. Folks keep having a hard time finding it, t'would seem.
