force to spread the turrets?
« on: October 22, 2007, 04:19:40 pm »
Camping complaints are associated with tight human bases. If humans have loose bases, aliens don't complain too much about lag when they get near the base with all the turrets. What if humans must place turrets a bit away from eachother to prevent loss of performance/effectiveness, with the excuse of turret sensory overload? To keep the game balance, I don't mean just lower the performance of close turrets, but maybe increase it if they are spread, etc.

[only write critics/explanations, in other words, if you have nothing useful to say, don't spam 'NO']

Would the plaintiffs be the five tyrants camping immediately outside the tight human base?

Tremulous is not the type of game that should force players into building in a certain way. The power of Tremulous lies in the freedom you have to tackle any given situation. While I can imagine that someone with your limited capabilities might find this a bit confusing, you'll have to trust me that this freedom is a good thing.

Also, your poll is broken, since you only let us rate your idea positively.

ha

The conflict is not between ideas/critics, but rather between me and a sixpack of noobs. Again, I receive nothing but flaming.

Noob, there is no loss of freedom. Tight bases will remain tight without suffering anything. But if the team is generous enough to spread the base and stop camping, that should be rewarded. A new possibility that combats boredom.

One wonders why one doesn't do the community a sizable favour and leave, sparing any future bits of idiocy.

Tight bases will remain tight.. by introducing an abitrary and nonsensical positioning factor which dictates (to a degree) turret placement?  Why would a team generously weaken their base (which some may argue is weak as it is)? and what would the reward be for condemning their chance at winning the match?

Please, stop with the balance changes and keep working on your (actually useful) code/feature patches.

You mean like atcs 24/7 with the same base setup every time? BOOORIING! If you can't stop, for a second, playing the same thing every time, go see a doctor. I prefer a new base location to that always-best that wins every time. It's not the winning, it's the gaming! (If the winning were fun, then you could make a map where you would automatically win.) And the spread base would  mean that turrets could turn faster or have longer range for example.

Some people agree, some disagree. But the first thing Lava does is gets his 2-3 accounts and votes for the 1 rating. Next, protestors go into action. Others don't even have a chance to reply.

sheeeesh, all this moronic shit so some players might get no lag?
Absolute the wrong way to go.

Just don't play on servers that demand more horsepower of your rig than it's able to support.

I'll agree with everyone here and say that it's simply pointless to "reward" humans for being forced into a specific layout. Clustered turrets are already penalized, to a degree; they're easier to take out than FOF-optimized designs (like mine for ATCS humans) by tyrants, dragoons, and even skilled maras.

Clustered/lined turrets are good for blocking access to vital human structures, but they are too close together to be effective at killing intruders. Having a spread-turret base creates a large killzone that effectively neutralizes any alien stage 1 or 2 threat. Coupled with live human support, the human base that I've constructed is very hard to defeat until AS3.

Forcing humans into specific build patterns ruins the strategic aspect of Tremulous. I don't know if you're a whiny unskilled alien player that bitches about being unable to attack human bases or what, but you're making a proposition that attempts to force humans into a bad base design that makes them unfavorable in winning the game. Most human bases are easily lost once aliens reach S3, since tyrants are impossibly strong and have a reach larger than a greyhound bus. So, this idea of yours would make sure that no human base could ever be built that enables it to at least partially defend against an alien onslaught.

Also, I fully agree with Caveman; if you're lagging out when you attack human bases, either upgrade your computer or play on better-networked servers.

In 1.2 the spinup time of turrets will reward spread-out bases significantly. The DPS on them is so vicious that in essence your only mission as builder is to keep the enemy in range for long enough to allow them to start firing. Ideally, you heav every turret set up such that strafing relative to this one will mean going directly towards/away from another. Once one is firing, the knockback and panic factor is usually enough to make it lethally difficult to recover.

For future reference, if anyone needs to use playing on ATCS to prove a point about how boring anything is, please go play a different game for a while.  Whatever anyone may think, ATCS is the most overplayed map in tremulous.  Of course there are no other base ideas to be used, they've all been built!  If you like the rough and tumble games where noone knows where a good base location is and builders experiment with abandon, go play a new map.
