Window Resizes, Desktop Freezes; Not answered - Help!
« on: October 24, 2007, 03:23:28 pm »
I'm running ubuntu 7.10, the latest Trem client, lowest graphical settings; I can launch the game, join a game, and even play normally, but only for a few minutes or so. At a completely random point during the game my game suddenly resizes to a smaller window and I'm unable to move, open the menu, or even do anything outside of the window. I'm forced to restart GNOME and launch the game again, only to have this happen again as well. Does anyone know what's going on and/or how to fix this problem? I looked through every page of this forum and only found one topic on this, which was not answered. They said something about compiz, which is fully integrated into 7.10, so there's not much I can do about that. Help!

You can do everything you want about compiz.
If you don't know how, best start reading the manuals for ubuntu.

If you do not know what Compiz is then you are not having the exact same problem nor are you using ubuntu 7.10

Cesium, try not pressing "Alt+Enter" repeatedly... that might help.

you seem to misunderstand, i do have ubuntu 7.10, i know this because i installed into my computer roughly a week ago and checked to make sure that it was indeed the latest version. i apologize if i installed something like linux and didnt have intimate knowledge on every single necessity  i have no need to pull the game out of fullscreen nor have i constantly. Perhaps once or twice i have but not in the same session or because of this problem

and my problem is the same, i installed tremulous through the add/remove application on ubuntu. i had to dumb down the graphics a bit, everything was rather choppy, i fixed that however. but at some random point in the game, it exits fullscreen and i cant do any action besides restart GNOME. correct me if im wrong, but this seems like a similar problem to the OP

so ill ask the same question; is there a solution to this problem that anyone happens to know? Thank you very much in advance if you can

Intimate knowledge is not needed, just a basic understanding what you are running.
And as admitted you are running Gnome and not Compiz therefor you do NOT have the same problem.

There are loads of reasons why this behavior is occurring.

The solution is to get a better understanding what is running alongside tremulous.

The OP's problem is compiz and it's failure to let more than one application use OGL.

Your problem can't be pinpointed as no one knows what processes you have running, not even you, as you seem to lack the basics.
Makes me wonder tho if you really installed ubuntu with gnome for a WM or if you just installed gnome alongside compiz and choose gnome when logging in.

But maybe the ubuntu community can help you there...

okay, thank you, i understand what compiz is now; a window manager. i would say i do not have that. i seem to be using gnome and thus, yes, i do not have the same problem at all; just a similar symptom of it.

in fact, im just going to reinstall the game and hope for the best. i apologize for the demand for help without providing the necessary knowledge to receive any. i simply saw a problem that looked like mine and dove at it. and ill remember this if i need more help in the future.

thanks again /bow

Actually, you probably do have it (compiz-fusion, actually), it comes default on Gutsy, and it's probably what's causing your trouble.  I've been having the same problem, and it went away (at least in windowed mode) when I turned off compiz.  It's super-easy to do so - go to the System menu, Preferences, Appearance, and on the Visual Effects tab set it to None.
It kind of sucks how they're trying to include compiz-fusion without actually mentioning the name.  Also, it's pretty useless, and you can't run the trademark cube out-of-box, because they left out the configuration program!  In a terminal, type 'sudo apt-get ccsm' to get it, and you should.

Oh, and a little clarification - Metacity is the default Gnome window manager.  You run compiz instead of Metacity, but you're always on Gnome, unless you're on KDE (Kubuntu).

I was suffering with this same problem. I do not believe that it is using Compiz that causes the problem. It looks by all accounts to be a problem with the screensaver. It is trying to kick in - because Tremulous (or any other fullscreen app grabbing keystrokes) is grabbing keys your session thinks that it is idle and is attempting to launch the screensaver. Disabling the screensaver seems to do the job for me.

Compiz breaks other OpenGL apps. And no, Tremulous can't get input without X server knowing about it first.

If my answer to your problem doesn't seem helpful, it means I won't help you until you show some effort to fix your problem yourself!
1.2.0 release's been delayed for 5:48:00 already because of stupid questions.

- You might have been suffering a problem with the same effects.
- What you believe is rather unimportant.
- What it looks like might have been a screen saver.

So by your own words you admitted that it might have been the screensaver that activated, even though you clearly have no clue that the real problem in that case is a faulty install of X.

For someone that claims linuxfoums.org as his homepage, you Sir are clueless.
Next time please don't come here when you have a problem with linux, go to the page you propagate.
