[SOLVED] Text screwed up in Ubuntu
« on: November 10, 2007, 01:05:28 pm »
Hello,

My friend is having a problem with Tremulous in Ubuntu 7.10 as to when he's playing, the menu is all well and good, but as soon as he enters a game, the text is completely screwed up (so badly so you cant read anything).

This includes the options menu (but not the main menu).

Thanks in advanced

Here
(I am the aforementioned friend BTW)

This scrambling seems to occur in both windowed and fullscreen mode - but only when tremulous is started from the main menu rather than the terminal. Also, my X server frequently (but not always) crashes when switching from windowed to fullscreen or vice versa.

I (unfortunately) have an ATI radeon graphics card, and I'm using the restricted driver (fglrx) on Ubuntu Gutsy, with the version of tremulous from the Ubuntu repos.

Please let me know if you need any more information. Thanks.

That does look and sound like a problem with the driver, yes.
I don't know how recent the ubuntu repo is.
Best try to install the binary directly from ATI.

If that behavior is only occurring when you start it from some obscure main menu, then you need to check that menu and modify the entry so it is the exact same as what you enter in a terminal.

OK, I'll try that, thanks.

Yeah, the menu entry had a --quiet flag on the command, which I wasn't entering at the terminal. BUT I have now updated the menu entry to be the same as what I'm typing at the terminal, and I still see the garbled text when starting through the menu. When starting from the terminal, it is fine regardless of whether I put --quiet or not, so clearly the issue is something else connected to the menu. Later, when I have a bit more time, I'll change the menu entry to run a terminal and have it start tremulous from there, to see if that makes any difference. Obviously the workaround is fairly obvious but it would be nice to have it working through the menu.

Any thoughts on the fullscreen<->windowed crash, or is that likely to be the driver as well? Also I was playing earlier and my battery monitor brought up a notice about power running low, which also caused tremulous to crash. My guess is that is the same problem and my window-manager was forcing it into windowed mode so I could see the message.

Thanks for your help.

If you are not running compiz or some deviation of it (including the compiz-decoration) then it is most likely the driver as well :)

Kuoso: I had the same problem, running on my Intel Mac. I didn't solve it, I just avoided it.

I managed to get tremulous working perfectly (as far as I could tell anyway, I only tested it for about five minutes) with the most recent ATI drivers on an otherwise fresh installation of gutsy yesterday. Unfortunately I then tried to install compiz and it destroyed my driver settings. I'm going to try again with a fresh installation, but does anyone have any ideas how to get my driver settings back if I accidentally trash them again?

Thanks.

- do NOT try to install compiz *sigh* if you want to play anything using OGL
- simply reinstall your drivers
- go to the ubuntu-community for further help, this here is for tremulous.

OK. Thanks very much for your help; tremulous is now working properly on my machine.
