Any way to change FS_Homepath
« on: November 16, 2007, 06:15:27 am »
I have tremulous installed on a nonstandard partition, and want to change the homepath (the one the GUID client uses) to the other partition, yet FS_Homepath is read only.

Is there any way to change this, and keep it changed?

Add "+fs_homepath /foo/bar/baz" to your startup I believe.  This differs depending on your OS, and if your OS is windows I dunno where you'd set it (haven't run it in years).  Linux you'd just add that to the command line.

Paradox, what are you trying to do?
Changing the path for the TJW-Client?
If that is the case, why should it matter if you run a server?
AFAIK you are running windows, have you tried setting the "working-directory"?
Oh and don't forget to move the files from .tremulous in "Documents and Settings" else fs_homepath will not work .)

I have moved the files, and used the code.

I am trying to move them because i ran into the problem of the previous server admin having made the system partition only 7gb in size, and surprize! It filled up.

Untill i buy partition magic, i am stuck.

BTW. this isnt on sst, this is for a lan club i am the admin at.

I am going to use partition magic because this is what i have broken down:
Physical drive size: 1.2 TB.
System Partition: 7.54 GB.
Other partition: 1.2-7.54=lots

With pq magic, i want to bump the system partition up a bit to about 100gb

It still doesn't seem to work though. I could link it, but it would make it confusing at best.

The solution is very easy.

... is easy... get GParted Live CD (or Live USB), and shrink your partition down, then create a new one.... restart, let Vista check the drive for errors (this is a must!), then install XP to the second one... you may need to restore the Vista bootloader, not sure.  To resize / move partitions in GParted, keep in mind you have to move the actual partitions before you can move the extended partitions that they reside in.. click "resize / move", then play your mouse around the borders to see what you can do.  Do whatever you want, then after it looks good, hit the "Apply" button, and it will do it.   If you need a walkthrough or something I can make one.

Code: [Select]
+set fs_homepath ...
+fs_homepath is not a valid command so it doesn't work.

Open command prompt, go to your tremulous directory.
Then open your binary with +set fs_homepath.

Right and now lets compare where the difference is between "+set <zz_xyxy>" and "<zz_xyxy>" :)
Imho native commands that are executed have no <zz_> prefix and everything that is considered a variable must have a "+set" in front of it... IANAL and YMVW.

@paradox
jr2 was on the right track, except that there is also a cygwin-bin for gparted and/or qparted that could be run on a headless machine. And the OS does not really matter, as long as it's FS is not xfat (g|q)parted can handle it. No need to dish out some money. Just be sure you defragged the drives, again avoiding MS-tools as they tend to _not_ gather the used blocks where you want them, they rather use some kind of obscure algo to interleave your files.

FWIW Paradox,
My HP laptop comes with a restore disk instead of an install disc  >:(  that restores to the entire drive.
In order to set it up for dual boot, I use gparted to shrink the NTFS system partition from 80GB to about 7.  WinXP, but still ntfs.  I have never had a problem with this though I've only done it about 3 or 4 times.

There is a bootable cd with gparted called SystemRescueCD, same one I've used without issue.  As Caveman says, defrag defrag defrag.  I've read that a fragmented drive can cause all sorts of headaches, though I've never had any (aside from the headache I get while biting my nails waiting for it to finish, which would happen regardless of what program I used ;) )

Obviously this requires console access.  Personally, I wouldn't mess with a windows system drive unless I had console access.

YRMV, but I've never used, nor felt the need to aquire partition magic.

Frankly, I'm surprised anyone would only give 8GB to a windows system partition, with the size of updates and general windows bloat it just isn't enough anymore.  If you are looking to free up space though, you can delete the uninstall files for the updates (some of which will be very old and you will NEVER uninstall.)  C:\windows\system32\$NtUninstallKB*  You'll need to set explorer to show you hidden and system files to see them.  No need to delete all of them either.  I usually delete anything older than a month or 2 (depending on how desperate for space I am.)  A quick peak on a WinXP box nearby shows these files taking up 657MB.

If you just don't want to mess with the system drive, you could shrink the big partition, carve out a chunk and mount it as your home directory on your system drive.  Depending on how much crap you keep in $HOME ;) that could be quite a bit of space freed up.  And with that, I'll expect a chuckle from the NIX folks at MS' revolutionary new implementation of a god knows how old Unix method :D

Yeah, my bonehead mistake.  +set fs_homepath is what I've used before.

At least I was close :P Sorry Paradox.
