usually, its pretty accurate. however, this forum seems to have quite a few people who just use it for fun and not its intended purpose. so, yes, it's useless.

I'll guess that once people get over its existence and the initial "ooh, shiny" factor, it may eventually turn into a semi-useful way to gauge someone's posts based on previous posting content.  Though a tie-in to ignore people with karma below a certain number would be nice, it wouldn't be useful until the karma hits a somewhat accurate level, which could take some time.  I'd likely be happier with a general ignore list/killfile.

Don't kill karma :(  I'm on a mission to get -100 without actually posting anything degrading or insultive.  So far I've reached -5 from 3 posts :O

On the other forums I've been on the karma system works quite well.

I think the karma abuse is in part caused by those who come here with the 'digg' mentality, those who consider it acceptable to 'ragg' on someone who's opinions are different or because of a personal agenda or just on a whim.

But anyway I think that  Rocinante is right, most of it is still the 'newness' of it all. It might be a good idea to reset the karma meters once the community settles into it.

Some people have told me they don't think a fat penguin really embodies the grace of Linux, which just tells me they have never seen a angry penguin charging at them in excess of 100mph. They'd be a lot more careful about what they say if they had.

Make it so only moderators/admins can give karma. If someone does something good (help someone with a question, etc.) they get + karma. If they spam, flame, etc, they get - karma. Once new moderates are needed again, the Karma thing would come into play and make their decision easier.

Maybe you should let the admins decide that... It's probably pretty easy to do, stuff like that can be done with invision boards VERY easily.

In my experience with SMF, restricting Karma to a specific class is quite easy.

So far it seems fine. We haven't had any people spontaneously flip in huge red font size about how they are going to kill themselves because their's went down a point.

Besides, its fun to see how many people have been clicking the smite button on others.
"Oh gosh....oh gosh! TEXTURE ERROOOOOOOR!!!"
"Shoot it! Shoot it!"
"Its got me!!"

I think the reason why people want karma gone is because they have negative karma :p. People are just smiting each other left and right and not applauding so of course it will get unbalanced if you don't give people recognition for good posts. I think generally the people who like or don't like you will persist though and that is how it will turn out.. which isn't really indicative of community opinion in a lot of cases. I think its a neat feature but its along the lines of post count in the amount of usefulness as far as i see it so far...
though the only place I've really seen play out long term is on the }MG{ forum and everyone knows each other pretty well and we understand negative scores are just people playing around with each other so i don't know if it will actually become useful as people say. I just see several good posters with crappy karma so i'd have to say it isn't working right now though..

You need to have X number of posts before you can modify karma, X being a number that I don't know.  More than you have, less than I have :)
Someone mentioned 100, though I haven't verified.
