Don your asbestos suits, comrades!  It's gonna get hot in here!

At least Windows/Mac/Linux flamewars are more entertaining than, say, religion flamewars.  Those get über stale real quick.

Microsoft's only saving grace is that they are necessary, because they have 90% of the PC OS market.
Microsoft's main fallacy is that they own 90% of the PC OS market.

:/  Although I must say Linux is a PITA to learn.  I mean from a power user perspective.  You play with too many settings, you'll find yourself staring at a command console wondering which config file you need to revert changes on.  Heh, heh... good luck.  I usually end up re-formatting and re-installing.

its easy to let most linux distros make selective backups daily or w/e suits you (my server backs up kernel/important files every night)
even to see what config files you edited lately isnt that hard... you just have know what commands to use to find out :P

but besides that... the desktops of current distros (KDE/GNOME) are very easy to use and much userfriendly actually then windows
installing programs is easier (they go where they are supposed to aswell.. in startmenu games go in.. GAMES not somewhere in the list.. same goes for other applications etc. :))

also... live CD's!! :) no install.. minimum ammount of RAM (while its loaded innit) is needed to run Knoppix or Ubuntu (i managed to run ubuntu on 64mb and knoppix on... 32mb :) )

its just you still have to know more about linux then windows to do more then just writing emails or surf the net :P

and i cant see why governments run windows... they mostly have a custom application running... port it to linux.. not that hard :P plus for example.. holland government spends over 300million a year on Windows licenses... switch to linux and .... they have 300mill a year to spend on everything else :)

@Steely Ann:
Yes i like to discuss differences between linux/windows/mac
since allot of opinions are based on different uses of the OS :)
I'm using Windows on my home PC, win2k3 on a seperate test/messaround computer, i use knoppix/ubuntu every once in a while when im borked of using windows and i run Debian on my dedi :o
WinXP aint a BAD os.. not for long :) its pretty decent... especially for a microsoft product, it could easily do allot better but hey.. nobody's perfect.. microsoft tried :P
Linux is more specific, also when chosing a distro, but also the way you want it to use or what you want it to do :p

wherin windows is more global and supports a wider variety of systems where you'll find that there plenty of linux distro's that wont even make it past install on your machine :P (i cant seem to get debian install on mine :()
now you have Vista.... i tried it.. i used it... i got sick of it... userfriendly my ass! only if you use whats on your desktop after installing Vista perhaps... otherwise its just the most borked OS currently available.. i would rather use Win98se or WinME then ever switching to vista :o

and then there is mac..... i never really used it because i dont need it :p

I still think violet is a prettier color than blue.
Violet however uses too much ram for simple processes.. blue at least will bring you coffee in the morning at 99 fps..... though robustness and compatibility are unparalleled with black.

Operating systems/servers are only as good as the people running them. This seems to be even more so the case for servers in my experience. I love linux servers but windows servers that are properly administrated are definitely a force to be reckoned with. They both run well. It just takes an inexperienced user at either to make them suck, and no doubt a lot of companies pick up windows techs that get frightened by a console and you end up with those companies having less reliable linux servers and eventually switching over to windows.. its all marketing when you make a big fake newspaper, but if you look into it enough the comparison between the linux and the new MS servers they are pretty level imho.

Great, another OS elitism war.

Face it people, just because you like something, doesn't mean others have to.

I like OS X, but am forced to use windows. I find linux a pain to maintain a system. Others find windows a pain, and love linux, others still just like os x, its all a matter of opinion.

Like Microsoft wouldn't know what they're saying ....

I Use Win2k Pro and IMHO it's the best O/S I've ever used. Super fast, reliable , has service packs (unlike Vista), nice interface (yup, thats right, I like it) and doesn't waste so much resources. I like it better than that crappy XP.

And yes, I have used linux before.

Ohh well, thats just my opinion.

Why don't you just disable the theme and other services you don't want on XP, then it will run just like 2K, except better?

Win2k is still supported, it's just some games are compiled with the inanely useless new editions of VC++ that tie into XP kernel specific functions for no reason other than to get XP more into the market

See: Doom3/Quake4 Win9X fiasco

IMO, Windows 2000 Pro, and Windows ME, and Win XP pro are the best.

There is a small problem with linux. It's backwards compatibility with windows games. The so-called compatability actually sucks, and is very complex

I'm not sure what ancient Fark Photoshop contest entries have to do with anything.
