its easy to let most linux distros make selective backups daily or w/e suits you (my server backs up kernel/important files every night)
even to see what config files you edited lately isnt that hard... you just have know what commands to use to find out

but besides that... the desktops of current distros (KDE/GNOME) are very easy to use and much userfriendly actually then windows
installing programs is easier (they go where they are supposed to aswell.. in startmenu games go in.. GAMES not somewhere in the list.. same goes for other applications etc.

)
also... live CD's!!

no install.. minimum ammount of RAM (while its loaded innit) is needed to run Knoppix or Ubuntu (i managed to run ubuntu on 64mb and knoppix on... 32mb

)
its just you still have to know more about linux then windows to do more then just writing emails or surf the net

and i cant see why governments run windows... they mostly have a custom application running... port it to linux.. not that hard

plus for example.. holland government spends over 300million a year on Windows licenses... switch to linux and .... they have 300mill a year to spend on everything else

@Steely Ann:
Yes i like to discuss differences between linux/windows/mac
since allot of opinions are based on different uses of the OS
I'm using Windows on my home PC, win2k3 on a seperate test/messaround computer, i use knoppix/ubuntu every once in a while when im borked of using windows and i run Debian on my dedi
WinXP aint a BAD os.. not for long

its pretty decent... especially for a microsoft product, it could easily do allot better but hey.. nobody's perfect.. microsoft tried

Linux is more specific, also when chosing a distro, but also the way you want it to use or what you want it to do :p
wherin windows is more global and supports a wider variety of systems where you'll find that there plenty of linux distro's that wont even make it past install on your machine

(i cant seem to get debian install on mine

)
now you have Vista.... i tried it.. i used it... i got sick of it... userfriendly my ass! only if you use whats on your desktop after installing Vista perhaps... otherwise its just the most borked OS currently available.. i would rather use Win98se or WinME then ever switching to vista

and then there is mac..... i never really used it because i dont need it :p
