New Engine
« on: December 06, 2007, 08:33:08 pm »
I know that this is a great game i play it alot but its engine is quite old and outdated and is going to die like planetside if not updated. All the engines i have listed have their benefits as well as their faliures.
1). Quake four is a great game engine but has bad graphics and unrealistic physics but is way easier to use and better feeling than Q3.
2). Cry engine is hard to get your hands on and requires Hi-Fi Systems but rewards you with a great feel and simplisity as well as really perfect graphical rendering.
3).The source engine is well established and if you can get on steam it would improve the number of users and players massively.
Please post your oppinions as i would like to know even if it is never looked at by the Devs.

For those who don't understand the concept of the search button, this has already been suggested and discussed into the ground. Furthermore, all of the suggested alternatives in the poll are commercial engines.

To summarise, the conclusion of many previous engine discussions is that commercial engines are unsuitable (for obvious reasons), and that porting trem to another Q3 based engine with modern graphics features could be worth the effort if there were any that could perform well.

Taiyo said it all. Commercial = bad. Tremulous wouldn't be free, and I doubt that there would me as much custom content as there is now. Tremulous is thriving, and I believe it will be for a long time.

Im not stupid ok. you dont need to make fun of me to get your point across. ya. i know that the cry2 engine is commercial but q4 and source are not. thay are open source engines now that have been freely released and the engine doesnt determine the content it determines the way additions are programed. anything can be added to an engine given enough work. Even if its not changed now it might be a good idea in the future because currently this game is going the way of planetside, EQ, EQ2, Starwars Galaxies and many other games that were fun at first but then got outdated. I still love this game though best open source game out there!!! :D

I don't believe that the source for the Q4 engine has been released.

Isn't Doom 3 Open source?  Or no?

No. I doubt it will be for some time yet - ID Software is currently licensing this at $250,000 per title + 5% royalties.

I'm sure whatever engine you buy for us the devs would be more than glad to give it a try.

Can... everyone vote for every option or is this some completely useless moderator thing?

Uh why not ask Bill Gates, He is rich right?
Maybe he will spare us a couple thousand and a great engine, but then that engine would be open source, or maybe we could sue him because in halo 3 everything is coped from tremulous including telenodes if you ever play forage.
But anyway, how much is a commercial engine or what is the one that call of duty uses, because I think that is open source.
We could use quake 4 because this is quake 3 which is about the same as quake 4.
We could maybe cut and past or could we maybe? I have no clue what i am talking about. Oh, wouldn't have guessed
If you haven't already noted and when is 1.2 coming out, maybe by the time of 1.3 ( if tremulous is still alive around then) there will be a new engine out or bill gates will give us some cash for a new one( i don't know(indeed, you don't) ).
Maybe he could make a contract that says that its non profit or you cant use. What i mean is if you are using his engine for profit you have to give all your money to Gates.
Oh and for 1 .2 boosters should poison humans if they jump on it (just saying) Random >.>
I really think that the call of duty engine is  up for grabs or maybe you have to crack the source code.
Anyway, how hard is it to make a engine in the first place do you have to go through 100010010100111  like that or can you do it on notepad?
That is what is stupid about apples they don't have notepad, or do they?
I don't think that vista does. vista sucks I don't think vista is the one who sucks here atm..
The only reason that anyone uses it is because its the only way they could buy. Vista is an OS, not a computer and Vista costs money...
Their computer, it sucks because they thought that mac was a small bug that they could beet by making a better program, a bigger bug but what they didn't know is the smaller the bug the more deadlier so mac owned vista and Microsoft wasted all its time on making a bug that was killed by mac, so now its has to go back to what it does best make xp type programs with lots of virus.
Think that is the problem with most non macs is outdated virus protection. Most virus software fills you computer with cookies.
Evil cookies that fatten up your computer so it is sluggish and unmotivated. The sentence after this one didn't make any sence at all, even less then the others so I didn't include it.
There should be an alien in tremulous. One that jams up the armory so it steals your money and you can't get your creds back.
That would suck.
Maybe it eats you too that would be funny an armory that eats you, that would be a good mod.
Where did benmacheens mod go anyway?? I liked it.
Really i want to host a server with it. Can someone please give the link in the next post that would be very helpfull plus where do you get the tremulous source code anyway because I know you have to extract it or something.
I said include source code when I downloaded it but it still didn't work or I can't find it.
Could you cut and past in it to make a tyrant clime on walls.
Is it in c++ or just c or is it in b?
Is there such thing as c+ or just c++? I think just c++. Am i right?
 I read the beginning of C programming for dummy's i guess i wasn't a dummy because i couldn't understand it.Figures
Well i could, but didn't know what to do. It just gave me useless facts like b stands for belgaim or something and at&t made C should c be capsulized. Did you even get past the first chapter or something?
I guess not considering that my grammar it sucks.lol
If you haven't noticed the hovel doesn't  look like a hovel see  :hovel:
I forgot what hovel means anyway  :advmarauder:and lucifer and many other things have real meanings, tyrant.Yea, It sucks that hovel doesn't really exist eh?/sarcasm
Someone should make a post about everything and its definition. I wonder what its definition is or where you would post it. On this forum, off topic or general discussion. Guess general discussion because more people would look at it.And you started off so well :(
It should be made a sticky. Is that what they are still called?
Why doesn't this site got any good skin anyway.
Its lame and looks unprofessional. Please make the better skin.
Someone shrinked my sig. I like it better.
You know noob pluks N00b pl0x sig how its How do i sort out sig.
I think he needs to just take out the boobs and he is fine.
I think that is what the moderators were getting made at. It's so funny, in xfire it says in the service agreement that I am at least 13 years or older I should disconnect .
#1 what 12 year old is going to be on xfire and #2: Who is going to read the service agreements? Well me, but still how many people ever read the service agreements.
I never understand why someone would want trem to be supported by steam.  What is the point?
You don't need a disk and its FREE.
pointless. My attempt to improve your post is.
I think trem is the best free game ever but its hard to find. Before I played tremulous, sometimes I would just Google free demo war game or something to find something good.
It was hard to find anything that was good tremulous should be easier to find or be advertise a little. That would cost money but I don't know. It was just an idea anyway. The quake engine is fine, it just needs some work like making it less laggy. Is that even possible? Yea it is. It's called upgrading your computer
That is the main problem with tremulous is the lag. If the lag was gone it would be fine plus aimbots maybe punk buster that is what they use in call of duty and that works well.
ok I am done thanks for reading. Amen

Punctuation, spelling?? please explain. Not everyone is as smart as you, you know.

Punctuations are things like . and , and !.
They're there to make things easier to read. (dot at the end of a sentence)
Didn't you learn about them at school?(Question mark here, because it is a question)
Writing that way makes things easier to read, because it looks cleaner and it's more obvious when a sentence has come to an end.(comma between read and because, so that you can take a small break reading. )

Spelling? Damn, how old are you anyway? 10?

If/When id releases the Quake 4 source code will Tremulous be ported/updated to the newer engine? I'm sure that it won't be released for quite some time, and I would like to hope that the Tremulous' dev's and community will still be around, but having some idea of what's to come is always nice.

it would basically mean rewriting trem from scratch, so i doubt it will happen

Pros:

Well, if we can wait for idtech4, we'll have an improved graphics engine (though, I don't believe id did a very good job on the idtech4 engine. There's so much more it could have had and featured, yet it doesn't. =/).

Being able to use easier, more powerful programs (while I'm a Radiant fanboy, it's no UnrealED).

Cons:

Doing all the models/maps from scratch (though, we could, if needed, port the models to the new engine. But this wouldn't show us the sparkling, new graphics we want.

We'd lose a fair few players to crappy hardware. At least you need an ATi Radeon 9600 to play Quake 4/Doom 3 smoothly.

That's about all I want and can type about at the moment.

Cryengine2? Are you CRAZY?! Do you have any clue what you're talking about? Two things. The CryEngine2 code will not be useable/under GPL for another...it may never be availible to us.

Also from what I've heard Cryengine2 is badly optimized and takes up too much hardware for what it actually draws.  Anyways I don't think trem players have hi-fi PCs. But if trem would ever get Cryengine2 for free to use: that'd be the time when they'd give out 2 free ATI HD2900XT-s for every download of trem... in b4 idiots not noticeing sarcasm: That is just as unlikely as we'd ever get cryengine2...

The only feature I like about CryEngine2 is it's amazing ability to sanely draw the scene.

By this I mean the engine does not need hinting. It does it automatically, which is by all accounts an amazing feature that I wish ioQ3 had. If you can't see it, it doesn't get drawn.
