If you wish to run a server, you should know some of the basics of how to find files, how to edit files, etc. The tutorials here do not walk you through the steps to install an operating system in order to support your server because YOU are expected to have SOME knowledge. There is a certain irony that you write that the tutorials do not state all that you have to know, yet your tutorial is horribly imprecise. Writing tutorials is grunt work, it appears that you like taking the time to be precise considerably less than those who have written the tutorials and config files you rudely critical of.
If you set up a server that you have NEVER set up before, step one is reading, LINE BY LINE, the config file and searching for ANY TERMS you do not understand the meaning of. Questions such as
this one clearly indicate that you have not read the stickies OR your config files.
Please, when you ask a question, follow these simple guidelines:
* Use correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Make complete sentences. Don't use ALL CAPS, l33t speak, etc.
* Ask specific questions, not open-ended questions. "I'm trying to start a server, can someone help me?" is not a good question.
* Provide as much information as possible. If you get an error, provide error messages, or a copy of the log. If you don't know what to do next, provide a list of what you've done so far.
Following these simple steps will help us help you, and it will make it much more likely that someone will WANT to help you.
This is a free board for a free game, ENTIRELY staffed by people donating their time. The portion of the sticky above is not so much a tremulous board requirement as much as a general internet guildline for getting help from people who are under NO OBLIGATION to help you.
The default server.cfg has a grand total of ONE instance of the word name:
set sv_hostname "Tremulous 1.1.0 Server"
If that is not clear to you, or you are unwilling to change that to experiment without our walking you through each and every step of how to edit and/or find the file, then I am afraid you will find few willing to give you that level of help, not to mention quite a few flames, as is evidenced.
The rcon password is not set in the default install (I suspect) because then rcon would be the same for anyone that doesn't change it and starts up a server, something I suspect you would have done.
Frankly, if you must resort to insulting those trying to help you, you probably are not mature enough to run a server, much less keep it updated.
I might add that this is not just in response to this thread, but many of the threads you have started.
