New forum usergroup.
« on: December 14, 2007, 04:36:41 pm »
I've seen this on another forum, where they have a usergroup which can post replies but cannot start a new thread.

It would be nice to have something like that here; perhaps based on karma, based on postcount, or done manually.

Do not want.

What about people who join to post errors?

We can kind of do that.

If you are a bad person, us mods can deny your posting ability, while still allowing you to browse the forums.

I'm sure it could be limited to certain sub-forums. Or, as I said, based on karma

Yes, Caveman, Yessssss.... and this is only the begining ;)

I'm willing to submit to the overall will of the players if they are not allowed to post in Mapping Questions, Mod Reviews & Releases, Map Releases, or Off-Topic.

one application to this is to force newcomers to introduce themselves to a "hello guyz" thread before they can start any topic

should work fine against spam bots
against idiots as well btw

Disallowing people with low karma to start topics would be nice too...
If blood2.0 keeps making topics in the mod section, his karma is probably going to end up rolling past negative infinity into the positives...

Agreed. We need someone to h*ck (Yeah mods, I know there's no mention of h*cking allowed on the forum) The Karma counter. Hello, Karmatical Domination!

<on-topic> What would this usergroup be called? I'm thinking "People Who Can't Post Topics Until They Make More Normal Posts" is pretty catchy. Or "PWCPTUTMMNP" for short. Even catchier. </on-topic>

Nah How Bout 'We got what we deserved' , 'What goes around comes around... to us at least' or even 'Useless posters'/'Enemys of many'.
(Soz Bored)
Though if it were based on Karma then people who team up to have everyone unable to post. So, it's probably a bad idea

Heh... I can't think of anything extremely aweful that I've posted... but apparently someone(s) think I should STFU and leave them to their 1337 clique club or something.  *sigh*

Personally, I'm a bit concerned about a forum for an open source, freely available game where new members couldn't post unique questions, which for other projects that maybe don't attract such a young group ;) is a common reason why people even set up users.  Perhaps allowing them to post to stickies could work, but the mods would have to modify that pretty heavily to keep them readable.  Lets face it, someone looking for a solution who doesn't search for it certainly isn't gonna read through a 25 page thread concerning their error. and getting posts on five different threads about "CAN I HAS TREM SREVER?!" is, in my mind, more disturbing than seeing a thread started about it.  Not to mention that someone who is gonna start a dumb ass thread is not likely to post their questions in the correct threads to begin with.

Just this second it occurred to me to have a seperate, knowledge base type section where topics could not be started, but threads could be moved to if they are particularly useful in solving a specific problem.  Perhaps a subforum of troubleshooting.  Hmm,  I'll have to think how that would work long term before I decide to bug higher ups about whether or not to try it.

On a side note, the one of modified karma, I respectfully submit this.  Apparently his original post was quite offensive to someone, or a friend of someone, who has root access to the db.  :)  I wanna say his karma started around -999, though if I remember correctly it was pretty negative to begin with, in the range of -20 to -40.

No, it is discouraging and serves no purpose. This offensive measure that you are proposing is the same as calling spammers to frequent users. And indeed, the frequent users are more in need of starting threads. Besides, the whole idea is ridiculous! Sorry if I seem to harsh, but given the circumstances...

Also, basing this idea on karma alone it is still a bad idea. It is like banning a user just because he has bad karma. This is practically allowing users to ban other users. The "karma" feature is sufficiently bad alone. Especially in here, where acts of revenge are quite noticeable and most users have negative karma, despite their sympathy.

I would bury this idea and then impale it underground with my shovel. Then I would dig for it, burn it, and bury it again. And then I would put a block of concrete on top of it. And then I would flood the area. The idea is so bad that even the remains are unusable.

That would be one of the worse things ever if it was based off of karma, Do not want.

No point. Having people post just for the hell of it before they can get to what they really wanted to post makes no sense.
Karma doesn't need any fixing.. it does what it does. It would be neat to have thread karma though.

I like tuple's idea about a knowledge base kind of thing.. whether that should be in forum form or not is another issue.

Do not want.

i beleive more than half of the forumers has negative karma.

everybody can be decreased to negative karma pretty fast, as I've seen the lowest around -100 and the maximum around 40.

and while even admins/mods can have negative karma, this idea is an absolut joke.
just some currents:

survivor: -4
lavarcroft: -10

Since it has been proven a million times that karma on this forum doesn't show any correlation with usefulness/helpfulness/style nor destrucivity/noobstomping/trolling. Postcount also never ever showed correlation with any of the above. We have moderators and administrators on the forum to keep the forum as clean and civilised as they can manage so we do not need an extra system that would only make life harder for everyone.
