Need help with moviestuff.(vid without subtitles uploaded)
« on: December 18, 2007, 12:30:22 pm »
Hey all, I'm currently working on a project on school: Make a movie.
We decided to make a movie featuring a high school shooting.
What kind of song would be fitting for a theme like that?
-You see the school, girl looking different then the rest stands there. Nobody notices her-
That's the part we need a song for.
Can't take my time posting here, seeing how this site is illegal and it'll give me a laptop ban.

Regards, shadow

Update: vid now uploaded, subtitles yet to come: http://www.youtube.com/v/PkCY7ZH9n6k&rel=1
It's so bad it's almost funny. After the creds come the bloopers.

It's a girl you said, so "Pearl Jam - Jeremy" wouldn't necessarily fit.. though maybe it still could.  And I hate Pearl Jam anyway.  Not knowing any of the backstory on this girl also makes it difficult to find something that would tie in, even if not until later when the backstory is revealed to the viewers.  Some of these will fit the story you gave, some just have dark undertones that will tie in slightly, and some just sound good and are completely an opposite feel for what you've told so far - which in itself can make for an interesting feeling for the viewer.  Hopefully you've heard of at least some of these :P

Aerosmith - Janie's Got A Gun
The Beatles - Happiness Is A Warm Gun
Blue Oyster Cult - (Don't Fear) The Reaper
Blue Oyster Cult - Godzilla
Cherry Poppin' Daddies - Drunk Daddy
Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)
Fishbone - Party At Ground Zero
Fleetwood Mac - Never Going Back Again
Gabriel, Peter - Games Without Frontiers
Gaye, Marvin - What's Going On
The Guess Who - Undun
Heart - Crazy On You
Hendrix, Jimi - Hey, Joe
Hendrix, Jimi - Manic Depression
The Hollies - Carrie-Anne
Jethro Tull - Aqualung
Led Zeppelin - The Rain Song
Led Zeppelin - When The Levee Breaks
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Saturday Night Special
McGuire, Barry - Eve of Destruction
Offspring - Come Out and Play
Orbison, Roy - Oh, Pretty Woman
Pink Floyd - See Emily Play
Pink Floyd - The Happiest Days of Our Lives
The Rolling Stones - Paint It Black
Rush - Subdivisions
Soundgarden - Blow Up The Outside World
Stealer's Wheel - Stuck In the Middle With You
Steely Dan - My Old School
Stevens, Cat - Wild World
Supertramp - Even In the Quietest Moments
Talking Heads - Psycho Killer
Talking Heads - Sax and Violins
The Temptations - Get Ready
Three Dog Night - Mama Told Me (Not To Come)
Traffic - Feelin' Alright
U2 - Sunday Bloody Sunday
U2 - Bullet The Blue Sky
The Who - The Real Me
The Who - 5:15
The Zombies - She's Not There

Wow, Roc, you are an oldster (like me). I'll bet you've even got some of that stuff on the original vinyl, bought back in the US Bong/Glass Head days. :P

@Shadowgandor: OK, there are many things one would take into account when selecting a piece of music for such a scene.

What sort of mood do you want to convey? Sadness? Loss? Foreboding? Whimsy? The grinding anomie and ennui that is the zeitgeist of our post-relativistic gestalt? Choose music in the appropriate key. Major keys are generally more yang, if you will, while minor keys are generally more yin. The more sharps in a particular key signature, generally speaking, the brighter and more sparkling the music sounds. The more flats, the more introspective and downbeat it sounds (also very generally speaking).

What kind of sound mix will you use in the final edit? Do we also hear ambient noise, of her surroundings? Do we hear dialogue, either out of frame, or perhaps behind or in front of her with a change of focus? What is the camera doing at this point? Who or what do we see? Who or what should we hear, in addition to the music? Will the relative sound levels be constant, or will the music swell or bed down to accent or make room for the dialogue within the soundscape? What is the audio environment at the time the music is heard and how will you edit it in and at what levels (again, generally speaking).

How long is the scene or shot in which we see this person? How much of that scene or shot needs music? How long is that, exactly, in minutes and seconds? Will the music swell or stifle? Should the piece be loud, jarring, soothing, comforting, long, short, quiet, peaceful, pastoral, bucolic, deathly, horrifying, etc.? What sort of dynamic are you looking for? Should it start out quiet and end up screaming, like a Linkin Park song? Should it be urban, contemporary, classic, timeless, with a groove, thundering, tinkling, instrumental, with a male/female vocal, a choir, a rock band, a symphony, a B-3 combo? What sort of timbres, tones, noises, voices and sounds should we hear, and most importantly, how should they make us feel (and how long is that feeling supposed to last for)?

That said, check out:
Spinal Tap - Lick My Love Pump (d minor, the saddest of all keys)
Joan Baez - At Seventeen
Ravel - Pavane pour un enfant defunt (Sad Song for a Dead Princess; also check out Debussy & Satie)
Bach - The Well-Tempered Clavier (select a prelude in the appropriate key) [I highly recommend the Angela Hewitt renditions]
Bach - Violin Concerto in E Major - Adagio (check out this version by Kyung Wha Chung, if it doesn't make you weep, you have no soul; this second movement is probably in a minor key)
Chopin - it's mostly all heart-rending solo piano pieces, find a second movement (adagio, andante or largo), an etude or a prelude in the appropriate key

//Oh, and Jim Foetus, the guy who did the music for the Venture Bros., (recently?) released an industrial classical album that sounds fraught with scariness.

//Here's a quirky version of Albinoni's Adagio in g minor for Violin and Strings (or Organ and Strings) as rendered by The Doors. If you can get a good recording of a version done with church organ, solo violin and strings, it is one of the saddest pieces of music you will ever hear, played back at an appropriate (slightly loud) volume. If you turn it way up, and stand back from it, and it's recorded nicely, it's impressive. It won't be by the Doors, it'll probably be by the Slovak National Orchestra on the Naxos label, but meh, a good recording is a good recording.

Good songs guys, I found a few.

Skillet - Comatose (About 10-15 seconds in she pulls out the gun)
Ozzy Osbourne - I just want you
Ozzy Osbourne - See you on the other side
I dont have time to find more unfortunately.

I do have a lot of it on vinyl, but bought second-hand.  I wasn't around until about 8 months after 2112 was released (New Year's Eve.. alive for 22 hours, tax writeoff for the whole year) :>

Rocinate already beat me to practically all the ones I would've suggested.  Lame.

Perhaps the Hurt cover by Johnny Cash or the lounge version of Get Down With The Sickness?  There's also some nice classical by Jeremy Soule if you wanna look him up.

Thanks guys, going to download every single song to judge em. I'm looking for a song that, in combination with the screens, gives you the feeling something happens.
Atm, we're using the exorcist theme song but i'd rather take a different song. Thanks for all the help guys, really appreciate it :)

btw, if i can, I'll post the results here. I did not agree on the script but whatever, they like it :P

Shadowgandor:

What is the visual pace of the scene or shot you need the music for? Is it a series of quick cuts, or is it a long and lingering dolly shot? Just a medium to wide shot of a girl in front of a school and nobody notices her? How are you establishing this with the camera? What is the tempo and rhythm of the final edit going to be like? How far away is the camera, are there any close ups, what time of day, what season of year, what happens to girl (is she the shooter or one of the victims), etc.?

Take the time to check out J.G. Thirwell. He did this, as well as this.

Also, definitely consider something in a minor key. F# minor and G minor are both pretty grave sounding.

I mentioned this thread to my wife, and she instantly thought of another "school shooting" type song.

The Boomtown Rats - I Don't Like Mondays

@ Rocinante:

Well damn, I haven't heard "Don't Fear the Reaper" in ages. Good songs you've got there.

@ thirdstreettito:

Another Skillet fan, are we?

@Shadowgandor

Here's some songs I'd choose from (assuming she's going to pull a gun now):

Comatose (gun@ 1:10ish); by Skillet

Open Wounds (gun@ 0:38); by Skillet

Let the Bodies Hit the Floor (gun@ 0:08); by Drowning Pool

Animal I Have Become (gun@ 0:57); by Three Days Grace

Get Psycho (gun@ 0:23, right after the scream); by Disturbed

Loading the Weapon (I've got the instrumental version) (gun@ whenever); by Disturbed

--

Perhaps something from The Rasmus would suit, as well.

SG, is the mood pensive and introspective, from the girl's point of view? Or is it swirling and energetic, happening all around her?

Charles Earland - Leaving This Planet (check out the jam that starts at about 1:55)

some dude playing a Fender Rhodes piano over the Root Down groove here

Jiri Kopecky - Woe, Forever Baneful Weight (traditional church music on virtual clavichord, almost banjo-like)

Storm, Inc. - Great Day (she steps off the bus @ 5:00, pulls gun @ 6:45, song plays in background during ensuing scene)

The above is used for hypothetical entertainment purposes only. PlayerOne would never shoot his classmates when he can best them with arcane jests and obscure put-downs.

//Don't know if you've ever heard of Die Kreuzen, but here's a video of All White.

//Also, Detroit Cobras, The Donnas, 5-6-7-8s, She, The Runaways, Shonen Knife, Girlschool, etc.

//Baroque Jazz Trio - Zoma

//Chord progression from The Promise by John Coltrane (if you want to do a slow-motion, time-dilation, or stop-motion, it-seemed-like-time-stopped sort of thing)

Alright, I'm going to try to explain what we're looking for
We're looking for a song that gives you the feeling something is going to happen. As a reference, think of the average horror/thriller movie.
The perpespective (sp?) is from an outsider, looking at the school and person on a whole. The viewers of the movie must be given the feeling something is going to happen.
Teacher coming, I'm out.

First 2 scenes have been filmed :o
It's going to be bad, period. lol.

The movie opens up on a picture of our school, only less busy ;)
It's a cold and cloudy day (we'd rather have a sunny day but hey, mother nature hates me) and you see the guy walking into the school, getting ignored by groups of people. The screen turns black and you hear gunshots and screams, see our teacher running away, screen turns black again.
That's the part we need a song for, I'm having difficulties explaining it in english so please bare with me (A)

Script form (If anyone is more knowledgeable than me in writing scripts, feel free to correct me):

EXT. SG'S SCHOOL. DAY

Mysterious boy walks towards the school. No one acknowledges him.

Fade out

SFX: A loud gunshot and screaming.

Fade in

EXT. SG'S SCHOOL. DAY

A teacher runs from the school in fear.

Fade out

SFX: [Insert Song Here]

But in your first post it was a girl...
Also, how long about is that scene?
Is it a one-camera shot?
So we don't actually see the shootings, you just allude to them with the fade-to-black and the gunshot SFX, correct?
I'd say Korn or Coal Chamber or Overkill, although I'm sure Beethoven or one of the Romantic composers could work quite well.
What country are you in?

//Oh, yeah and what is dude's motivation? Why does he do it?

//Tell your teacher not to hassle you. You're not only practicing your English, you're in a script conference, conferring with consultants who've donated their time to your effort. :P

It is done...5 minutes of film lol (from which 2 minutes are bloopers but hell xD).
It didn't exactly become like we've wanted it to be but hell, it's good enough for me.
As a 'thank you' for all the people suggesting songs, I'm going to upload it, but first -dumdumdum..- subtitles lol.
