Setting up a Tremulous server on a free host
« on: December 18, 2007, 07:29:59 pm »
Hello,
I need some help with setting up a tremulous server on a free game server host. The host i wish to use states that i am allowed to upload servers and run servers on my account.
Is it the same as just setting it on on pc and running it from Cpanel or something? Or does it require more steps? And how would i use the mod on it?

I have three hosts, all which use the same system (Linux)

Server Information -
 System - Linux
 cPanel version - 11
 cPanel - PRO
 Bandwidth - (500,000 - 40,000 - 40,000)
 Disk Space - (2,500 - 5,000 - 5,000)

They do not specify how many "slots" i would need, at all.
They are totally free and let me use bandwidth as i please as long as i dont go overboard.
How much bandwidth would i need if maybe 3 or 4 people would go on a day?

Also, how do i password-protect my game when its hosted by the free online host?

Thanks for your help,
Drakotsu

Forget it :)
If you need to ask when you are using UNIX (mind you, NOT linux) then you will have no chance to see this through.

you'll probably need shell access to the server to get anything done (and unix isn't very specific, what flavor and version is it?), and as caveman said, if it really is unix you're probably screwed (i still have nightmares about compiling tremded on freebsd 4.1)

Ok let's plan it out. Asva, you are nub, go sit on rets, I will build, you two go feed like hell, you go pwn their asses, and everyone else camp in the hallway, roger?

Ill re-check my hosts and see. Cant i just upload the folder tremulous into the paths specifyed? And upload the files to the correct areas

Sorry for the typo guys, i asked the admins of the hosts i use and they said it was a typo in thier control panel, the APACHE is unix, the actual server LINUX

If the server is Linux, yes you can just upload things and it's quite likely it will work.  If it was Solaris/IRIX, hahaha good luck :P

Well, lets see...

- You'd want to have some features that are not in SVN nor in the stock repository, so you'd have to compile it.
- You'd have to have root on that host so you could open the firewall.
- You don't want to use the Linux-repositories as those would install the binaries outside the luser's home.

But most of all you'd want to read some manual so you have at least a basic understanding of the OS you are about to muck with.

As for "APACHE is unix" and "the actual server LINUX", neither makes any sense and you'd know it if you get thru 101.

If you really want that server, ask the admins to set it up for you.

Refering to their apache is run on unix and the server that they host accounts on for others to USE is on lunix. is that really hard to understand? xD

Just read up on the basics and you'll see what's so hard to understand^w^w to explain when you miss out on the common grounds :)

I have yet to see what distro you are using.
And you cant just upload any files to a linux box hoping it will work.

Find out the account password under user (root).
And use SSH to configure your tremulous server, using a cPanel is just going to confuse you.
After you find out the information that I have listed above then I will show you a tutorial on how to set up a server.

You need to verify that you have shell access.
Once you are sure that you have shell access, you can search for how to setup a server on any *nix, or read several of the stickies.
