Building: (general guide not a complete guide)

Ok for every one who is about to read this know that spelling and grammar isn’t my strongest point, please realize this and enjoy the content and not the small mistakes (possibly lots of them).

Pre: ok before we start building there are some pointers we should know:
1: At each stage you can build different structures, which accomplish different feats.
2: A base is only as strong as its weakest point.
3: You may not be the only one person building, adapt and improvise use the knowledge of both builders or help them or visa versa.
4: Before you start to build in a permanent spot look around, see how vulnerable your base is and from how many sides. If it is vulnerable from four sides you are best off to move the base.
5: Not every one will be happy with a base move so if you do move it, ask or give warning about the RC move. And never do it alone! Have other players to defend you!
6: If you move the RC build DEFENSIVE structures first even if it is one turret (recommend at least two), next come the spawns, than you may build in whatever order you see fit.
7: Your base will always be destroyed without maintenance and human defence
Ok with these things we can start:

Stage 1:
At stage one you are able to build: tellenodes (spawn points), armory, machine gun turrets, a medi-station and of course the main building the reactor (RC).

With the game started on almost all maps the humans are vulnerable, sure they may have a few turrets e.g. A.T.C.S but those turrets are by passable if the enemy is a goon and will have a straight run at your RC. Your first step is to counter this problem; you are able to do this in two ways:
1: offensively, this is having your defence to stop the enemy getting to you main structures.
2:defensivly, this is having your defence in and around your main structures to protect them.
Each of those two strategies has its advantages and disadvantages, which I will leave you to discover for your self (the reason I do that is to help you improve your building skills learn from your mistakes lol and other builders).
Ok now you have your own opinions on building so I will offer guides for both styles:
Do’s:
If you are going to move the RC (meaning in S1) than do it first and with cover, not just a lone builder.

Get your defence up first the only reason you would do other wise is if you were doing a rc move.

After you have an established defence you can move other structures to your liking.

Donts:
Do not EVER leave the RC completely defenseless, even if you are building and offensively. The reason for this is that if your forward defence falls than you are totally vulnerable or even if they just by pass the defence.

Do not have your turrets in a random mess the reason for this is that it reduces the efficiency of them and the damage they can deal.

Do not leave a turret by itself the reason being a dretch can kill a lone turret. The minimum amount of turrets grouped would be 2, however I would recommend at least 3. This will not always be possible it may conflict with your build points and or your building style. If you are confused watch me build on atcs and you will see what I mean.

DO NOT BLOCK the retreat path with turrets!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is both annoying and pointless.

(these pictures are from another person forum and are not my own)

Do NOT DECON!!!! I don’t give a F#$% about who you are or whether you are winning or loosing this is not cool and is highly annoying to other players

Musts:
If the base is smoking and some turrets are down don’t be a noob and keep fighting, pick up a construction kit and put the turrets back where they were before they were destroyed, unless you are redesigning the base
(the only reason  you wouldnt use a construction kit was if you were the key defender)

Keep the armory accessible and protected.

Protect the RC

Hope this helps you all, may it set you on your way to becoming a master builder!

Hrm...I have to ask why this never ever happens in the GA servers...Every game the path is blocked and no one EVER complains.

I just did a bit of thinking, and realized there is NO reason to ever leave a gap. If it's s1a vs s1h, a gap won't help you vs goons and rets mow down everything else. s2a vs s1h is basically the same as s1a vs s1h. s2a vs s2h, you shouldnt need any ret support - at least while fighting. s3a vs s1h you're screwed and are probably camping it like the dead dogs you are. s3a vs s2h you die in 2 hits. A gap won't help you - since if rants have to get that close, they'll probably either not atk, or go for rets. s3a vs s3h you shouldn't need ret support at all. I survived for 5 minutes with 1 ret, 4 naked rifle allies and a luci vs s3 - we had no armoury.

Of course, I could be completely wrong. Just hope I ain't building in a game you're playing in, cause I ALWAYS block with rets.

P.S. You guide will probably help newb builders looking for tips. Also I like the last bit about helping rebuild base when it's smoking. If only more then 1 in 20 players did this.

Despite it being an unsavory compilation of the stickied advice the reason for leaving gaps is not only for defense but for denying the opponent a kill. Many a good dretch will go for the low stamina, low hp human who is waiting for the stamina to jump over turrets, sacrifing a 0 evo life to the turrets to get a kill. Marauders like hit-and-run tactics on turret waiters and medpad/armory lines as well.

A commonly decent strategy is to build a pyramid of turrets, with teslas behind them. This prevents the teslas from being dretched, and allows both to do damage to larger aliens. Your only worry then is dragoons and their sniper barbs.

err, teslas being dretched? That's like impossible if they're up and powered.

Sarcasm? I hope so, if not I'm sure Paradox meant the turrets being dretched.

But they're not talking turrets, they're talking Teslas.

hey liq3, just letting u know y blocking is bad: 1stly it feeds good dretches giving away usless evos 2ndly this is only s1 building 3rdly u arent likely 2 get pounced by a goon if u are right near turrets generally its in the base or getting to the base not the places where unblocked retreats are...

yes more people should help repair...

.....ummmmm...... we have kind of have played 2 getha, we play 2 getha alot actually........ -|HG|-Valour............. yeah......

Wrote teslas but meant turrets in second sentence? (A little Christmas cheer had him PWI?)

I have used the  :turret: :tesla: formation in the little cubbyhole on the tunnel side of A.T.C.S. many times it is a solid strategy, it keeps the dretches out and distracts all the others
