Gamma Values Ingame
« on: December 25, 2007, 11:45:11 am »
The gamma value is used by players to lighten up dark maps. The danger is that it flushes out colors. For mappers to accurately represent the light level they want to represent it is handy to know the most common gamma value of the playerbase.

We will assume that, since tremulous is a dark game by nature, noone will opt for the lower than standard 1.0 value.
If you have e.g. 1.6 as the gamma value choose the 1.6-1.8 range.

If you don't remember anymore simply typing '/r_gamma' in the console will display the currently used gamma value.

it's really bad that it's now the mappers who should adapt their maps to the players' r_gamma

Not really, the stock maps are the cause of players adjusting their gamma. So it's actually the original mappers fault :p.

Depending on the map, 1.2/1.3/1.5. I rarely use 1.

The poll is wacked because what I use (1.6) is listed twice. Make it 1.0-1.2, 1.3-1.5, 1.6-1.8, 1.9-2.1.

I always use max gamma (2.0), so many maps are too dark to deal with under any other setting.

1.2, usually. In a lot of my own maps I use 1.5, as that seems to be what most other players use. It's too bright for me.

Also, it depends a little on the graphics card.

My map is fine in gamma 1, sexy in 1.2, and acceptable in 1.5.

Its all pointless anyway.  I play with 1, but with this crappy old CRT here I have it really high, and still can barely see.  It all depends on the screen.

Also, 99% of people don't even know you can change it.  Develop for 1.
Any maps not in the MG repo?  Email me or come to irc.freenode.net/#mg.

i have to agree with david, on my old monitor i had my gamma set above 2.0 to achieve the same effect as 1.3-1.4 on my current one. as a general rule a map probably shouldn't be darker than tremor or brighter than atcs (unless you're comparing it to catalyc's gloomified screenshot of atcs ;D)
