Sidewinder - X-20 MapComp Judges' reviews
« on: January 01, 2008, 03:39:24 pm »
Mapname: Sidewinder
Author: X-20

Story: The included readme sucked. Let’s face it. At least include your own readme if you submit something. It’s just text.

sidewinder-b1-build4.bsp
sidewinder_b1.map (1.383 kB)
{0.15}(2) Skill in building, judged from .map.
Where to start. I know he submitted it knowing it would probably get bashed so we’ll start with the biggest thing. The caulk box enclosing the map. That is unnecessary and not done. The rest of the map is badly and unimaginatively textured. If he would have spent more time than a few days on it, it could have received a far better point here.
{0.25}(2)Bugs, inconsistencies, judged from playing and inspecting the map.
There are texture dependencies on other maps. Which is a bitchy thing since it then needs other maps to be displayed correctly. Once again an easy fix. The textures themselves do not always look good and to be frank once again a bit more time could have resulted in major improvements.
{0.3}(4) Gameplay, judged from playing.
There are some nice spots in the map. The shower area with its slick surface and the multilevel cargo area could have been wonderful additions to a better map. Too bad that the rest is so bad. I once again feel that if a bit more time were spent on it major improvements would have occurred.
{0.3}(3) Creativity, judged from looks.
Let’s be honest. This one was slapped together. Wasted potential. The grenade chest was nice. The weapons rack not implemented well. Ups and downs counted there’s just too many downs.

Total Score (3,025)

Well i fully accept and welcome the rating :) i had very little time to make this and such, but... should i continue this for a beta 2?
-----------------
Also on a side note it kinda feels like people forget ive ben only mapping for a little over a month - look at battlearena and compare it to this.
Thanks for the time judging it :)

New map. Take what you've learned and start anew. And I know that you haven't been mapping for long but that doesn't mean you can't put in some effort, if you'd reread you'll notice i'm especially hard on the lack of effort. Take your face's map for example. He has shown miles of improvement over his previous maps and I've also taken that into accordance.

{0.15}[0] The building skills showcased, as judged from the .map source.
What .map?
{0.25}[1] Bugs and other weirdness as found by playing and a little searching.
I have all the stock maps installed, yet I am missing textures. It seems the map is dependant on Thermal, Procyon and TheBunker. Malformed brushes. Mis-textured faces. This map is a showcase of a cheapskate going for some quick glory. Unacceptable.
{0.3}[2] Gameplay, as judged from playing for a very, very short period, alone.
What can I say. You walk from big box to big box, there are some spot where you have some combat on different levels (z-axis combat), but everything is so goddamn retarded and bland that it just totally destroys any kind of gameplay you might look for.
{0.3}[3] Creativity, as judged from the overall impression of the map
There is a slick floor in the shower. There are malformed and mis-textured weapon crates. There are cars from the 1940's parked outside. Too bad all of this is completely out-lamed by the repetitive texturing, constantly returning crappy brushwork and complete lack of a theme of any kind, unless the theme was 'shitty'. In that case, you have completely succeeded and you get a 10.
Total Score [1.8]

Ill end this review with just saying that you should steer clear of this map.

For lava, this is positive support. Be happy. Use this as a learning experience and move on. Make practice maps (DON'T release the first one or two) and then come back with something decent. We don't need more box maps.
