To be quite honest, I don't think that most people on the forum want newbies. Although you do get some promising players, most are just assholes.

You people are all a bunch of elitist assholes. You should welcome new players with open arms, since new players is what keeps a community alive. To me, you are all a bunch of new players, so please stop this behaviour. No newbies means a game dies. I only have to point in the general direction of Q2-Gloom for proof.

When the next version comes out we gotta be prepared to promote it, not only to the end-users, but also the people in the game review world (web and print). Offering them a download to review (2 weeks/1 month) before it comes out (to make them feel important, and create some anticipation too.

Btw, stop treating Trem like its still a f quake mod, no need to mention it everytime, people don't care.

I agree. I generally believe a majority of new players actually want to learn the game. However, unfortunately, it is the few jerks that stand out and make the new players look bad.

I have to agree with you there. I remember trying to play gloom a while back. It was only about my third game and some guy (an admin I think) actually kicked me for not knowing how to build a forward base. I could never be bothered playing Gloom again.

The strange thing is that newbies don't generally bother me. They do some pretty silly things but as long as you don't let them play with a conkit they can't cause too much damage. It seems that it's easier to blame newbies then to look at the actual source of the problem. The real problem seems to be elitist players who are rude, arrogant and aggressive to other players especially newbies. It's nice and easy to say that it's newbies who are wrecking the game but I wouldn't be so sure of that.

Interestingly, the amount of "new players - good / bad" arguments are constantly increasing on the forums. A lot of thought is being put into it and a little change can be observed.

If you really look at it from a side, Tremulous is even more arrogant, aggressive, and repellent game than Q3 or even WolfET. And its quite obvious why it is so, just because that in Q3 and WolfET all newbie player knows by default, that shooting their players is bad, just by instinct of "this thing does not attack me - then it is on my side". In tremulous a newbie player can damage gameplay by simply dieing a lot, feeding some pro player, or when he has already been pissed off by not being able to kill anyone, he tries to understand ckit, and then gets kick/ban from the administrator for noob building.

2 most distinctive features of Tremulous are RTS part of the game and aliens. None of them are newbie-friendly and in addition to the community, which is fed up by this irrogance and which cannot be able to distinguish between a deconner and just a newbie... just makes the newbie income drop nearly to 0.

Tremulous is proud to be based on a teamwork, but does that really work? WolfET is a teamwork game, and surprisingly players do teamwork, even newbies, somehow, someway but they do achieve the targets and play different classes. They cannot damage the gameplay but just not being able to kill a guy with 30 rounds from 10 feet distance.

Personally, when I first joined a server, and was cooperating with another builder (newbie as well) to move OM, we both got a ban for 1 month due to a move during the planned rush...

Anyway... back on topic.. dugged..

Tremulous is newbie friendly.
It is idiot repellant.

I am not against new members in the community.
I was a new player at one time, and i slowly picked up the game in a few days, mainly by observing other players.

If I could do it, anyone else could.
The problem is most of the audience for tremulous is middle schoolers, and as such, the attention span of a small rodent.

I mostly tell new players to read the tremulous manual, look at the FAQ on this website, or go to tremwiki.com

From my own and seeing others experiences, there are a lot of confusing things in trem, so I don't see why one doesn't read the manual that comes with the game download. Or am I just kidding myself? Does ANYONE read it?

Not while the official release is so buggy. It's a great game, but 1.1 has so many holes in it that if it were a ship it woulda sunk as soon as it hit the water

When I find a newbie who just loaded the game up, I'll spend a couple minutes specing them and giving pointers.  Do ground headshots, don't use ckit, buy armor and helmet, don't use the blaster, press q at the green building to get better weapons, y for teamchat, that sort of thing.  They are usually getting kills in a few minutes and having a lot of fun.  I don't do it every time, sometimes I'm just in the mood to play.

Its a free game, few will read the manual to try a game out when it takes less time and is a great deal more fun to play a round.  Its what most people do, screams of RTFM notwithstanding.  :)  You can try to affect this reality in a positive manner, or you can complain and be controlled by it.

FreeAllegiance is a nice example of such behavior.

Personally I think that that game is one of the hardest in the sense of learning curve, but once I have joined a server, instead of being kicked for complete newbiness, I was greeted, given an explanation on basics, and given a freedom to screw around the game, with a few "dont do that" pointers.

After it, I have read the rules of the game, and there was a "conduct" where the administrators were not allowed to kick newbies (ranked game) unless they perform destructive actions. Under the threat that the server will be removed from the masterserver list.

I think we might try to have a similar thing going on. The master server is not the property of the server admins. And having a few community moderators, wondering around servers, collecting evidence on such threats (if we will have some global ranking for trem) and then ban those servers from master list...

Well.. its just a wild idea..

Whoa, I see that many more people want newbies than I thought. I guess my post could be interpreted as elitist which isn't what I wasn't my aim at all.

I guess what i'm trying to say is, Tremulous is a FPS and from stereotypes, the people who would be most attracted to it would be the idiotic fratboy-esque people. Think FPS Doug, only not acting. Most of the time I try to help a new player I usually get a "F U noob" I guess others have had better experiences.
