Improve building

This idea is simple and should be easy to add:
1. choose a surface on which to place a structure by aiming on it (cursor needed),
2. hold RMB and drag to rotate (screen doesn't move),
3. hold LMB and drag to choose a place for the structure. Moving around shouldn't rotate the placement of the structure. So less running around and better building.

The color of the structure placement should be different for "no power/creep here" and invalid placement and both together. Also it should be much MUCH more transparent and show the wireframe of the building. If you are a builder, you should see a line on the map where the edge of powered/creeped areas are.

might add more ideas...

Sounds good to me. There are more important matters, but if/when this gets implemented it would be very helpful to builders. I would add one thing however, when placing the building, the bounding box of all allied structures should be shown.

IMO top down building.
That wouldn't work for aliens, they can put stuff on the ceiling and walls, not just the floor.

UniqPhoeniX

How the hell wouldnt it work??? If you aim at ceiling first then it ofcourse places the structure upside down... If you got any idea why it wouldn't then tell me.

Paradox

I like the idea of rotating an object, but other than that, the current building system is fine.

Perhaps the rotate mode could be toggled with the right mouse button. Press it, and then moving the mouse rotates the building.

But rotation should be locked to only rotating around the y axis. If you build on the ceiling, it would be upside down, and build on the ground, and it would be right side up. Q.E.D.

Using RMB to toggle is not as good as using by holding and dragging. If you just release it you will less likely move the mouse a bit accidentally, then if you had to click it.

You guys realise that RMB is already used for 'cancel building'? It's actually already overloaded on grangers, who use it for swipe as well.

How about the scroll wheel (weapnext/weapprev)? Those get overloaded quite a bit, could use them to rotate the schematic buildable. Would only be useful for turrets though and something like your DCC laser would be a better idea.

i don't think there is any use left for rotating buildings in 1.2
Quote from: Asvarox link=topic=8622.msg169333#msg169333Ok let's plan it out. Asva, you are nub, go sit on rets, I will build, you two go feed like hell, you go pwn their asses, and everyone else camp in the hallway, roger?

Either there are no buildings in 1.2, or the devs did something awesome. I can hardly wait.

Neither.

Yes, now they just get confused and point randomly. :)

Sounds like a good idea, but I don't know how much of a difference it would make, and sounds a little like too much effort for something that might change building surprisingly little. I may be wrong however, so please correct me if you disagree.  ;)
