This should be posted into the mapping section
The program used is GtkRadiant. Google for it.

Can Blender be used as well, though crappily?

Yes, but you would have to caulkhull the model created with blender in radiant.
I’m busy. I’ll ignore you later.

Making an entire map in Blender will also be very unfriendly to the PVS, unless you chop it up in several smaller models.

What does caulkhull mean?

Would Wings3d work fine?

Caulkhull means to seal the map from the void using structural caulk brushes. This is necessary because models do not block vis.

Any modeler can be used, but the model will need to be exported to md3 before it can be used in a map.

Although it's not a recommended, or even sensible way to make a map.

The program that's best suited to the job is GtkRadiant. If you're using Ubuntu then it's probably easiest to just use Ingar's Linux builds:

Problem with the models is that their are "transparent" in physical sence, a player will not collide with them and you will have to use Radiant (and the only program for Q3 afaik) to create brushes which will reform your models to some extent. It is also a very inefficient in the fps aspect as well as gameplay. (otherwise called : model spam).

Radiant is a nice tool to map with. Not very powerful, but will allow you to get the basic geometry done, after which you can get the models to fill the harder parts.

You can create the map geometry in any modeling program that can export to MD3 or ASE. You'll need to split modelmaps to achieve acceptable performance. Still, after this you'll need to go through radiant to caulkhull, hint and place the required entities.

Is there any particular reason why you can't use radiant?
