Why can't players build in my map?
« on: January 28, 2008, 12:36:34 am »
So. I'm a somewhat inexperienced mapper, but not unsuccessful. Only problem is, my most recent map (i love the z-axis...  ;)) has a slight problem. No one is able to build. There is plenty of empty space, and buildings placed in radient stay, and I have not touched the no build shader. Can anyone explain my problem? I uploaded the map to my personal forum, if anyone could check it for me. I really think it's a good concept. http://forum.d-epic.org

Do the players have available BP? If they don't then check the build points in the worldspawn.

Looking at your map, I didn't see anything that would indicate why you're having this problem. However, I can tell you that your map, while having an interesting concept, is completely unplayable for tremulous. Jettards could pretty much annihilate anything the aliens can throw at them, and be pretty much unreachable because of the trigger_hurts that are all around the map. Also, the map is unplayable for rants, goons, and maras, because they are likely to fall off all the time.

- Caulk. Use it.
- Please remember which game you are mapping for, and take it into account when making the map.
- Try to break up your texturing, repeating textures don't look good at all.
- Huge columns covered in a light texture look really unrealistic and usually ugly.
- Making a map inside a huge box is almost always guaranteed to play awful and look awful.

It's not the worst beginner map I've seen, but it's broken enough that I think you'd be better off starting from scratch. That being said, I hope you learn from your mistakes and make a good map that people will enjoy playing :)

Well, honestly, the point was to make a vertical map... Rant's do okay, since the rail keeps them from falling, and there are large rooms for cover, and humans can't dodge them on the pathways. Buy yeah, goons would have problems and maras would have to stay inside to work... at least wallwalking aliens could avoid anything, but actually hitting a jetpack would be difficult. I'd've put the walls and celing closer, but then goons would die from jumping. I put the damage low to protect them, so they can maybe recover from a fall and the celing and wall damage to make jetpack guys a bit more careful. But it really isn't much higher than say, atcs, and the multiple levels make it harder to isolate someone. I think I'd only play this map on an infinite build server or something... And the light texture was for base coloring, because I didn't realize at the time that you can just color the lights, lol. So thanks.

Like other people have said, interesting idea, but this is Tremulous you are mapping for.

I'm pretty sure it is caused by the trigger_hurt thing. Don't make the brushes trigger_hurt by selecting several at the same time, it will make the space between the brushes unbuildable (i found that out the hard way >_>)
Fix it by deleting all those trigger_hurt brushes, then make them again one by one (so that compiler does not see them all as one single brush.
Hope it helps =)
