I am running tremulous on two macs, an old power PC emac desktop, and a brand new macbook. The weird thing is they both have the same problems, but I have several freinds who run tremulous just fine on a mac. when I first open tremulous, it finds all the servers just fine, but when I join a sever, it will run fine all though the loading but as soon as it goes to the screen where you click to select your race, the game freezes and nothing happens when I click, but I can accsess the escape menu. This happens about 9/10 times. If i go back to the server select screen, I click the "get new list" button, and with ever click it gets less and less servers, and about the 3rd time it will say -1 servers. This is EXTREMLY frustrating and, and has been happening since october, so please help me. I have seen other posts like this, but the fix was always for a PC.

I've taken the liberty to shorten your title and add [MAC] to it, in the hopes of attracting some Apple users.

I may be way off base, but it sounds something like network issues in that you get fewer and fewer servers returned.  I have had trem freeze up at strange times before getting fully into the game when network issues are present.  Is there another server on your personal network running torrents or any type of file sharing app?  Is someone else sharing your wireless?  Are you on wireless?

When this happens, can you hit ~ and get the console? (crap, thats not the console for a mac I don't think, anyone??)  If you can, type:
Code: [Select]
condump PlaceYourFilenameHere
search for that file and post it here, it may have so useful info in it.

You may also want to try deleting/renaming your autoexec.cfg file for tremulous.

These aren't OS specific, but just some basic trem troubleshooting steps that may help.

O.K, first of all I am on wireless, my brother does use bit-torrent often, and ~ does open the console on mac. But I have no file named autoexec.cfg, and what file are you implying i post?

Are both your computers on the same network? If so it is most likely, as tuple said, an internet issue, and probably not a tremulous one. Try taking your macbook over to a friends house and see if tremulous works there.

It works better at your friends house? How does it work? Is it just laggy, or does it fail to start up or something? Also how does your friends mac compare on that network?

it is never laggy, it just less of problems stated above. And as far as i know, my freinds only very rarely have this problem (once or twice a month).

someone else making heavy use of the internet connection you're using (bittorrent being the best example) will cause you to lag because  they are using up so much of your connection.

bitorrent usage increases ping "ALOT"!

i did that once before
just 1 torrent file can cost me the increase of about 200++ ping
so

(normal)
Ping 100++

{torrented}
ping 300++

u see?

A lot of routers cannot handle many connections at once.  This is a problem ive had to troubleshoot in bittorrent forums also.

The thing may well be, that as your client pings all the servers in the list and waits for a reply, other connections may be taking over, therefore dropping the waiting connections you have.

I probably haven't explained this very well but basically, if you want to get accurate server data from over 100 servers which all need pinging and an open connection to wait for the reply, any other services - such as bittorrent - running on your network attempting to open new routes to seeds will be eating up those half open connections before they get a chance to reply, so you're going to have problems.

Now, one thing you can do is adjust the Global Connection limit and total concurrent connection attempts (if available) on the client which is running bittorrent to 30 - 40 and see if that helps. If it does, you can raise the limit higher and see if that causes problems.

What you will find is some routers can handles 100's of connections (even 1000's) and  some struggle with more than 50.

Overall.. try removing all other computers from the network and then see if you have problems.. just pull the cables, unplug, then plug in the router from the power, let it reboot and see what happens for the next half an hour.

Your router must really suck.  Mine (£30 consumer trash) can hold almost 6k in the contrack table.  If I cut back on the other trash on it, could up it even more.

If yours can't handle under 1k, then don't even bother running bit torrent without setting the ttl down way low.

And a ping of 65 is good.  I rarely get under 150.
