Jet Pack Limit?
« on: February 07, 2008, 07:08:34 pm »
Just wondering if there's any mod that limits the jet pack so that you need to land, alternatively go back to base and recharge, after 30 seconds of flying or something like that. Is there? If not, it'd be a nice feature ^^

raping the reactor in 30 seconds is much more fun, then it turns off the jetpacks :-)
anyway, they cant shoot too much without a battery pack, so the useful time of jetting is limited that way, and non-energy weapons are not accurate enough to use from unpouncable hights.

Probably you are thinking about the Enemy Territory: QuakeWars-kind of jetpack, what is more fun than the one Trem has.

I wonder of how easy it will be to convert current jetpack into ETQW jetpack... hmm..

I think a good way to limit the affect of jetpack camping would be to do something like.
There is a value on the z axis of a map where jetpack is unaffected.  But as you go higher above this point it will drift much more and reduce the accuracy of your weapons, say make weapons 2/3 as accurate when more then x feet above z value and 1/2 as accurate once past a certain point.  Such as if your camping up at the top of say push cannon your lasgun no longer has perfect accracy and lets say it becomes accurate to within 5-10 feet of the target now (assuming your at the very top).  This wouldn't apply to mass driver though, but the high amounts of drift the jetpack would have at high levels would make it harder to aim in scope for extended periods, ala camping an exit from alien base.

I think that could balance it pretty well.

I always wished the jetpack just gave more of an upward boost(like an extended jump) than a constant fly-anywhere forever pack. A quick burst of speed straight upward which would let humans get to anywhere the jetpack normally allows them to go, but not allowing them to float around uselessly.

Severely limits the use of the jetpack in building, though, which is basically half of what it is useful for.

how about a second jetpack? in could be the "boost jump" kind and have some other use like a battery pack that doesnt store as much energy?

doubt it, depends on how the implementation will be done the jetpack could be used in building by keeping yourself in air with short bursts, or just leave the jetpack as it is if player has conkit

A: "Look at the cool jetpack I got!"
B: "Thanks, but how long can you stay up there?"
A: "I don't know that! Whoo-Aaaaaahhhhh!!!!!!!!!!"

If someone puts this in their mod, I'll probably spectate an ATCS match or two just to watch noobs drop out of the sky like dead birds.
If you are going to put a timer on it, make it slowly on stamina. When it starts to run out make the jetpack sputter and fall, so that every alien in earshot knows to go outside and catch him like firemen with safety nets.

The "Jump Boost" jetpack would be neat but it would be too mobile. I suspect that the reason for current jetpack is that slow upward lift gives early worm chance against the bird.  It is similar as setting up base. Once the base is up it's harder to get down. also as the jetpack is slow, most of the advantages of it would disappear with fuel counter.

To make twist to this jetpack problem people have, I have an idea:
Mara stationary mode! Basically the third attack slot would halt the mara as if it were building and model would have animation of it turning upside down and legs centered to one point. Now dretch comes and uses the mara with q like building and enters it as if it were hovel. Model of dretch appears (with hitbox) on top of the legs of mara as if it were holding it. Also mara player gets new indicator in hud (like round crosshair) that tells him that dretch is in it. When mara attacks the dretch launches at that direction with extreme power (a lot more than goon pounce).

Make the jetpack have a finite amount of energy in its "bank" (capacitor), which is continuously being recharged by the RC at a rate that allows it to operate at current speeds... you can hold the sprint button to use extra juice from the capacitor and go faster... but, if you use all your extra juice, the 'pack slows down to 1/2 its normal speed while it recharges.  Perhaps there had better be a way to choose when to do this recharge, instead of when the capacitor is empty.

That would ruin the idea why it is so slow in first place.

Well the reason humans camp with jetpacks is 'cause you can't evade with them.  If you actually had a useable speed which *was* limited in duration, you would use that to get a healthy distance into the sky... now you've dodged the initial attack, but you're out of boost power, and so are therefore slow.. and the alien is getting ready to attack again.  Now you have a test of skillz between you two.  MTBMW
