Wouldn't it be cool if you could spectate people through a little PiP box and play at the same time? Keep an eye on a suspected aimbotter or just watch your friends? What's everyone think about this?

ETF's engineer could have a PiP view from one of his turrets.

It dropped the framerate significantly.

I would BE SICK!!!

Not that bad IO spose, but its like in split screen driving games, your racing your friend, then after a while you realize that, although you doin awesomely, you arent actually pressing buttons, nor have you elevated psychic forces, you realise youive been watching your friends half of the screen, and that sucker you lapped fifty times on the other side o the screen is, sadly, your car's charred wreckage.

But with a command like

!splitspec "name"

I think it would be cool.

I'm not talking about split screen... I hate split screen >_< I'm talking about a little box in the corner of the screen, or maybe on top. I've played a game called "nexuiz" that has a little zoom box similar to what I'm thinking of on top of the screen if you type a command in the console, I didn't seem to have any framerate drops and the only reason I stopped using it is because the zoom wasn't high enough... The reason I thought it would be cool is because, a few days ago my friend and I planned to play a match together; we thought it would be alot funner playing together, but it didn't feel different because we only saw each other for a few seconds at time, and neither of us ever knew what the other was doing  :-\

I think this could be as well an human equipment. Just some additional buttons to cycle the players. (numpad +/-?)
Could be great for scouting or using other players as guinea pigs.

OMG I LOVE NEXUIZ!!!!!!!!!!
I find it kinda a spin off of UT 2004 tho

I always play the robot guy.

I can find that box thing in it tho...is it in the newer one?

It would be "neat", but think of the costs in processor time and RAM of running two renderers at once, not to mention the costs in bandwidth (and cheating potential) of sending the other guy's surroundings to you as well.

Besides the possible drop of framerate, I am a little worried about potentially cheating with this. It may be fairly easy for server-runners to be able to enable it so you could watch people who are not on your team. (this would be just for people on your team correct?)

Yes a sizeable amount of people who play trem play on much less than recent hardware. So they key is always to be able to turn these things off. Not to avoid them.  However this particular feature could be a disadvantage for those who can't enable it. From the way it was brought up it sounds like it should be an admin feature anyway and not just an everyday for everyone thing.

I think it would be interesting for you to only be able to watch from the view of people with a helmet or bsuit when you have a ckit or as a granger you can see from anyone on your teams eyes when in the hovel.  That would make "scouting trips" to the other base alot more useful for a prerush helper.

The devs could be bastards and suddenly release this along with extreme, Crysis physics, delete the caulk texture and not allow any of these needless functions to be turned off!

You can actually do this, easily. Your hud just has to be modified to display the new shader.

You use a portal. In fact that's how ETF did it, I think.

That's exactely whats wrong with it; though it is a fun idea like cg_thirdperson, it has potential to be used to cheat; so it would need to be limited to your teammates only and not yourself from my perspective.

with third person you can simply make a bind to toggle it on and off and then you can just kind of peek around corners then switch back fast enough to fight. but looking back on this I could see how it would be beneficial to an admin who doesnt want to stop playing to see if someone is hacking

Now you don't even have to be a spectator to ghost!

Why did you all of a sudden bring Nexuiz into this? (I used to play that a ton too  ;D) but uh off topic.

And I dont see how this would enable you to ghost without going spectator

It wouldn't be hard to do, there are already hacks where you can "drop" a camera in the enemy base :D
DeFRaG Quake 3 mod had epic PiP camera.
Code: [Select]
Linux: ~/.tremulous/base/
Mac: ~/Library/Application\ Support/Tremulous/base/
Windows: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Tremulous\base\
