IRC channel stuff
« on: February 18, 2008, 10:09:12 pm »
We've been getting some hassle in the IRC channel (#tremulous chat.freenode.net) recently. The good news is I've changed the channel mode to hopefully prevent the bot spam. The bad news is that it means you have to register your nick to talk. This isn't all that hard though:

http://freenode.net/faq.shtml#nicksetup

Any problems, let us know.

I also highly advise that everyone get a cloak.
http://freenode.net/faq.shtml#cloaks
I believe dasprid or someone can hook you up with a tremulous related cloak as well.

Have your client automatically identify you when you connect.

I remember when timbo set that in channel.

Perhaps a bot could help, Supybot has anti-spam plugins.

Grab an x-chat build (available for Windows and Linux, MacOS if you don't mind compiling it yourself) or some other IRC client.

Tell it to connect to chat.freenode.net.  Choose a nickname and change to it with /nick <nickname>, and if it's not registered by someone else then '/msg nickserv help register' to learn how to do that.  Then '/join #tremulous' and say hi.

After having seen this happen a few times, I felt the need to point out one fact about IRC; not everyone talks all the time.  For example, I'm logged in almost 24/7, but obviously don't talk while I'm sleeping, or if I'm out doing other things.  Many others stay logged in all the time, while some will connect in the morning and chat as time permits throughout the day, disconnecting if they're going somewhere or going to bed.

Why do I say this?  Because this happens too often (name changed to protect the guilty):
Code: [Select]
23:29:40 < inaki> nao
23:29:40 < inaki> :!!!
23:32:13 -!- Someone [somehost] has joined
23:32:22 < Someone> Hello, anyone here?
23:32:38 < Someone> Bah.
23:32:43 -!- Someone [somehost] has left []
23:33:01 < Navi> Wow
23:33:22 < Navi> 21 seconds that time

It's not that nobody wanted to answer, but it's hard to answer someone who is only in channel for 30s when maybe you moved to another window to read email or check a website.  So if you want to chat, definitely stop by - but stick around for at least a little while if you expect an answer :>

I will leave him anonymous, however.

Well, my reviving this thread wasn't so I could poke fun at someone.  I just hate seeing people join a channel, make comments about nobody being around, and leaving - all during the time I'd gotten up to get a beverage.  Even if you can't leave your IRC client connected all the time, at least leaving it on while you go do other things will make you more likely to see who's around and in a conversation, and when the conversation picks up again as people return to their keyboards, wake up, etc.

True, true. But hey, you can't expect an IRC n00b to get that on their first or second try...

Hey, I just got the Xchat thing and tried to register, but it said I was already registered. Is there another Datastream I am unaware of? Or am I completely missing something.  ??? ???

The channel is part of a rather large network. It's well possible and perhaps even likely that there's already another Datastream of Freenode, even if that name is unique around here, yes.

This is more of a Freenode thing than a Tremulous IRC channel thing, but while on the topic...

If you run into this sort of problem, ask NickServ about the nick in question:
Code: [Select]
00:01:52 -!- Irssi: Starting query in Freenode with nickserv
00:01:56 <Rocinante> info datastream
00:01:56 -NickServ(NickServ@services.)- Information on DataStream (account DataStream):
00:01:56 -NickServ(NickServ@services.)- Registered : Feb 25 07:32:21 2004 (4 years, 18 weeks, 2 days, 20:29:35 ago)
00:01:56 -NickServ(NickServ@services.)- Last addr  : n=datastre@5aca95b5.bb.sky.com
00:01:56 -NickServ(NickServ@services.)- Last seen  : Jun 19 20:41:28 2008 (1 week, 5 days, 07:20:28 ago)
00:01:56 -NickServ(NickServ@services.)- Email      : noemail
00:01:56 -NickServ(NickServ@services.)- *** End of Info ***

In this case, it seems that the person is definitely still using the name, but if the "Last seen" date is quite old you can always join #freenode and ask for a staffer to drop the old registration.  I'm not sure what the cutoff date is for considering a nick "unused" but they will do it more often than not.
