Trem making my pc crash
« on: February 29, 2008, 03:50:21 am »
Yes Tremulous makes my pc crash.

I had to reformat so now im in the process of setting this thing back up with drivers and whatnot.
I am current on all drivers so i should be back to normal correct ? Wrong

Everytime i open Tremulous i get about 1-3 mins before it crashes my whole computer.

Not an overheating issue.

My computer only does it when i open tremulous and nothing else.

Cant seem to trouble shoot it myself so any thoughts ?

Basic info will be needed to help you with almost any sort of problem.
In particular your OS and some basic specifications of your computer.

Do you get any errors? What do you specifically mean by crash? (bsod/locks up/ tremulous just stops etc(

Yea i was just in a hurry yesterday when i posted.

Im speaking of crashes as in i hear my fans shut down and my monitor goes black then that yellow no signal box appears.
I was thinking maybe it was just trem but now that ive checked a couple other open source games i have they all too shut my computer off.

Im hoping it is just my video card crappy out on me for some odd reason.
It went from running trem and other games fine to 48 hours later shutting down my pc, after a reformat of course.

Xp is my OS... no need for ridicule.

No errors at all just shuts down.
AMD Athlon 3200
1.5 gig ram
Radeon 9800 Pro
Not a cooling issues as far as the case.

Any thing else you'd like to know?

If you've got $$ to toss at it for a good guess, replace your power supply.  I've seen machines lock up under strange circumstances due to overheating or memory problems, but the only times I've seen them power off completely is either a severe overheating issue (motherboard kills the power to protect the CPU) or a problem with the power supply.

You can rule out temperature by finding some application that'll read the thermistors on the CPU & motherboard (they'll usually tell you things like fan speeds too, and maybe the temperature in your hard drives if they have sensors).  But if I had $50 and those symptoms, I'd probably go for a new PSU first.

Yea my power supply was shutting down about a month ago cause the fan was stuck or something.
I took the grill off and loosened the screws some and it works now but overall it could be the culprit.

I'm thinking of replacing the video card and power supply now.
Sounds like another 150-200 dollar slimming for my wallet.

sounds like your cpu is overheating to the point where the motherboard shuts it off, try installing some software to check the cpu temp.

Ok let's plan it out. Asva, you are nub, go sit on rets, I will build, you two go feed like hell, you go pwn their asses, and everyone else camp in the hallway, roger?

Ok Kevlar now i just have to figure out the max temps for my chip. Mainboard is running at 41 c and cpu is at 58 c..

Then under voltage it shows +12V and in the box mine says +3.04V.

There's numerous voltages used on there; Off the top of my head, you'll probably see a +12V rail, +5V, -5V, +3.3V and likely a few others, some of which might be only in the CPU (Vcc, Vdd).  If you can get a manual for your motherboard, it'll probably tell you which sensors are available and what readings you can expect, then you can see if any of the rails fall outside normal.

Only problem is, a PSU can also put out the correct voltage but not nearly enough amps; so you'll see +12V right up until the point it shuts off when it can't handle the load :P

CPU temperature seems a little high to me, but I stay away from overclocking & performance stuff so that could be a baseless gut reaction.

60C is pretty hot, but the one cpu i've had shut down from overheating did so at 90C (this was in the days when amd was infamous for heat dissipation issues), try starting trem in windowed mode (+set r_fullscreen 0) and watching what happens to your cpu temp.

I just went ahead and replaced the video card and power supply in it lol.

New video card took a 3 hour tuning session to achieve a fricking 27 benchmark score.

Needless to say buying the cheap card means buying the pos you shouldnt have even looked at in the store.
