Paradox

Will we ever get them? The devs already have them, and they are a nice addition to the site.

werepants

I second that.  avatars are the coolest.

Survivor

Not if people use fugly ones and change them every day.
I'm busy. I'll ignore you later.

Paradox

admins and mods could take the people who do that's ability away, make a special class.

benplaut

my vote for avatars...

(what, just $.01!?)

[HUN]N.M.I.

Yeah it's really annoying when people put in disguisting pictures and change their avatars every week/day.
It's much better and faster to identify people who have their own avatars. I vote for avatars too, with restrictions (can't change 10 times a week, size...).

Paradox

There are tons of avitar controll plugins for phpBB, all the restrictions are possible, even easy to set up.

Neo

They should see if there is one that allows disabling by user so if someone abuses their avatar use they lose that privelidge

benplaut

or just one avatar per week, etc

SLAVE|Mietz

bump for avatars

raph

we realy need avatars
it makes it much more personal

PIE

Thought i'd revive this.. because I'd like an avatar..
I'm wondering though.. why they are off in the first place.. any real advantage?..
Policing avatars would be a pain in the ass i'd imagine(i'm not aware of the plugins, but that would be awesome!).. but even having a pre-defined list of selectable avatars would be nice.

I know a lot of forums have a thing where you have to get over a certain ammount of posts to get an avatar... 50+ or so.. that would work excelent

vcxzet

hell no....
signatures are annoying enough and avatars would be hell

Lava Croft

A small Avatar is always nice. What Ultima do you prefer?

Basilisco

Avatars! woohooo!! (that means yes most of the times)[/size]

Glunnator

Avatars! Yay! I'd make my own Av.
I'd make an animated one!
Now if I had an idea what i'd do for an av... IDEA!!!
*Zoomz off to work on an animated av.*

I think that Avatars are cool.

However, they make pages load slower unnecessarily, and use up server space. Plus, I've never really seen one that made me go WOW.

Yeah, they're cool, yeah they're personal, and yeah, I'd use it, but I don't think it's necessary.

Timbo

One idea we were bouncing around is to award avatars to people who donated over say $10 to the project. I don't know what people would feel about this?

tuple

Maybe other kinds of contributions to the project could earn avatars too, in game graphics, documentation, that sort of thing

A lot of things aren't necessary ;).
And how will you see one that makes you go wow.. if we don't have them?
And honestly.. if your avatar is using up a lot of server space you need to keep it to yourself because its too big.. Avatars should and most likely would be restricted in size.. so page loading shouldn't be a problem, something I don't think signatures have currently.. so arguably they could be infinitely worse than avatars... AND you have to scroll past them.. they aren't on the side of the page out of the way.

@timbo
Fine with me. And they could indeed be used as valuable rewards in that kind of system.

garoth

I still think that they are wasteful in terms of general use, and they do slow things down a bit, especially for people with slow connections. Server space probably won't be a problem true enough.

I'm a webmaster myself, so I think about these things.

However, I do think that as a on-reward-basis, that would be fantastic. People who help out the project (or anything open source) deserve kudos in one way or another, and this one is good. I like the fact that people who help out are recognized but do not get special game-affecting privalages. Then this would be no better than adventurequest, and that's shit from a non-paying point of view.

Cowsaysmoo

meh, it'd be nice to have, but atm I just put my avatar in my sig :)
oo

Lava Croft

Timbo, the Donate for your Avatar idea is very nice. This will also keep the amount Avatars fairly low. And I'm not trying to be sarcastic, I think it's a neat idea.

I'd fork over $10.  The game is more than worth it.  Shit, I should do that anyway.  (I'm broke at the moment... But it's almost next month...)
