What's worse, cutting or starving?
« on: March 04, 2008, 02:15:55 pm »
Had a discussion with someone I know, not going to call it a he or she, it's just the subject: The subject stopped cutting and went over to not eating (anorexia, mental disease). The subject said cutting was worse then starving, but I personally think starving is worse. Note: I do not think cutting is good either ;)
 What do you guys think?

ps: No, I do not cut or starve myself in any way. I was just wondering what people think about it.

pps: Sorry if I'm breaking any rules or anything. It's not a personal life story or anything, just a question about a serious thing :)

Who says they aren't the same person?

Edit: And where did I say I wanted to help her? I mean, I do but that's not the subject of this topic.
And yea, just call me [Z|R]Dr.phil :)

Anyone who feels the need to self-harm urgently needs the help of a psychiatrist, whether the self-harm is in the form of starvation or cutting is irrelevant.

You could try cutting yourself open with a sharp piece of food.

Not having the urge to injure yourself in the first place?

Priceless.

Seriously, if you want to hurt yourself (or your friend wants to hurt herself), it is a cry for help. Real, professional help. There are many societally approved ways of injuring one's self that seem less direct. Might I recommend extreme sports, organized religion, or a steady diet of processed food and concentrated toxins? Perhaps a brief stint as a "dancer" might restore your friend's sense of perspective. At least it's a more profitable way of dealing with the issue than cutting and starving, and I'm sure she'll find many fellow travelers among the exotically-inclined (now that she's lost all that weight from starving herself and gained all that attention from mutilating herself). Perhaps a role model is needed. Britney Spears? Seriously, get her some help. Don't feed the trolls (even the RL trolls).

I think hurting yourself just means you are a underachiever. Make it to the top and just kill yourself.

What's worse, cutting or starving?

Sometimes I think some people live too well. They know no hunger, no fear for their life, no opression, nothing - they do not suffer. And because they do not suffer, they suffer the absence of suffering.

Maybe those people should be moved to a 3rd-world-country, then they would know what real problems are and stop with that bullshit.
I have retired from Tremulous. Definetely. If you play a game just because it has become a habit, but u'r only feeling like a kindergarten teacher - well, maybe I am just getting too old (hell, I was a teenager when DukeNukem3D was *new*) - it's probably not a bad idea to just let it be. And I do.

Don't take this personally. Have fun, guys.

It's the typical misconception of a short-sighted Westerner to say that real problems are in 3rd-world countries, as opposed to 1st-world countries.

Four Worlds
After World War II the world split into two large geopolitical blocs and spheres of influence with contrary views on government and the politically correct society:
1 - The bloc of democratic-industrial countries within the American influence sphere, the "First World".
2 - The Eastern bloc of the communist-socialist states, the "Second World".
3 - The remaining three-quarters of the world's population, states not aligned with either bloc were regarded as the "Third World."
4 - The term "Fourth World", coined in the early 1970s by Shuswap Chief George Manuel, refers to widely unknown nations (cultural entities) of indigenous peoples, "First Nations" living within or across national state boundaries.

These, "2nd world" countries include Russia, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

I have nothing on topic to add Im afraid, although i think your friend could use some help and sometimes sympathy only rewards that type of behaviour, enforcing it as a useful tool for attention.

Anorexia is worse. Can cause developmental problems and all kinds of other stuff including a deteriorating mental state.
I knew someone who went through both myself.
Sounds like you just need to convince this person to exercise.. it takes care of both issues and is good for you. That isn't always easy.. but either way the person you know probably has some serious self esteem issues. Other people may make them feel better for a while but ultimately if they don't change the way they think of themselves its just going to create more obstacles.. exercise helps. One thing I learned though.. you can't fix the problems for them no matter how much they may want you to.

excuse me guys, but what does "CUTTING" exactly means is this particular case...? you mean that the dude is occasionally cutting his wrists with a blade?

yesterday in the radio they said there is a "new" type of mental disorder similar to anorexia, it's called drunkolepsia. it's when you are not eating but drinking alcohol only.
well, if i'm forced to choose, I'd prefer that.
thinking about my past years i'm sometimes falling into the cathegory <.<

Due to it's potentially long-lasting effects, anorexia could probably be described as "worse".

omg. this is very freaky.

theoretically, if something would happen, should we hack Gandor's IP and email to get access to the dude who is in trouble and than call ambulance/police or send there psychiatric help? <.<?

freaky chapter of internet morality <.<

That could take a while and if you fail it could just end up making them feel worse and end up pushing them in deeper.

Both disorders are fairly common among young girls. Just be supportive and careful how you address the issue.. There is a good chance she will grow out of it if she is in the typical age group though if it is extreme the damage could still last a lifetime.

Yeah, a fair bit of the girls I knew during junior high and high school (myself included) went through a phase of one or the other at some point. Still, you shouldn't expect her to grow out of it, or anything like that. Quick reaction to the problem, before any lasting damages occur, is really the only way to go.

@+OPTI+: chick, dude, not dude

@PIE: You are right, and it doesn't have to be that much. Walking half a mile (which is like walking for ten minutes and turning around and walking home) once or twice a day, every day if you can do it, is enough just to clear your mind and get you out of the house and into the fresh air. It doesn't have to mean going to the gym or anything. Just a walk around the block before work and before dinner is well worth it. Hell, sometimes I even take the dog with me.

@Atom Eve: Thank you. A little estrogenic perspective was called for.
