The Original Quake
« on: March 09, 2008, 02:35:14 pm »
I was wondering if anyone here has the original Quake and what kind of fps they are getting? I'd like to know how a 1996 game plays on 2006 hardware :P If I can get 400fps with my "decent" computer in Tremulous/Quake 3 than what about even older games.

Post your computer specs along with average fps. Other older games, pre-2000, are more than welcome!

Well, on a core 2 duo machine, running the original DOOM, I get 35fps.

Quake runs on anything with the power of a dishwasher. A 486/33 is basically enough to play the game, although a Pentium CPU is recommended.

@ Taiyo.uk - 35fps? I hope that's a typo....

Yeah I know, thats why I want to see how well it plays on new computers. Sort of like playing Crysis today, there isn't really anything available that can "stomp it." But in 3 years it'll be old news and will probably play fairly well on a mid-range PC.

I get 1000 fps on Quake 2, but it lies like that when you uncap it...so idk what kind of FPS I get.
I disable a lot of stuff on the Quake engine I use, like reflective water, just so it's easier to kill people. I play games for the gameplay, not for it looking like real life.

Nope, not a typo. DOOM will give you 35fps on the latest quad-core, dual GeForce 9600 system.

He's right, DOOM will.

prboom uncapped running in OpenGL mode might show some high FPS though.

No. It uses a software renderer that caps the frames at 35, obviously because they thought 35 FPS was "enough".

Nowadays I'm forcing to change the company's profile from CoD4 to Quake2.

2 MacProz vs my poor pc :-)

game experience is just neat, the rythm and weight of the game is far better than Quake3 Arena IMHO.

I wish trem would be a Quake2 mod <.< :-)

Ive got the original cake. It will make about 1000 years now. Looks like a mossy rock, but it is only a bit dehidrated, though. I sell it for 200 bucks.

That's because it's capped at 90 by default.
