Who amongst us are Overclockers
« on: March 12, 2008, 06:55:59 am »
I was just wondering who here overclocks their rigs, I realize that by hardware standards nowadays Trem isn't the most demanding game...but I just got me Crysis and ,mother, does that abuse my system. I actually want to overclock my GPU more than anything 'cus thats the choke point.

Core 2 Duo 2.4 (E4600 - 800Fsb)
1.5 Gig 667 RAM
Gigabyte GA-945GZM-S2 mobo (Rated fsb is 800 but can be set to 1066fsb in the BIOS)
Gigabyte 7600GS (256mb) G-Card

yea I should probably dump that mobo, the 945 chipset is a little dated, but that is one good board.

Overclockers anybody?

If you are prepared to take the chance at melting your processors, then overlocking is for you.

I personally wouldn't, as buying really good cooling systems is more expensive than getting better processors and RAM afaik.

Well the Core 2 Duo are well capable of being OC'd. I bought a Gigabyte 3D rocket cooling tower along with the proccy and even under load it barely gets to 25 degrees. These days OC'ing is as easy as messing with some BIOS settings and tweaking the voltage.

I'm just curious, thats all.

I may consider it when I start building my S.O.M.

when i bought my home computer with a Dual 1.8, the geek dude overclocked it to dual 3GHz, but he said that it wasn't 100% reliable, so he set it down to 2.4 just to be perfectly safe. but he was quite sure that 2.8 would be also quite massively correct.
oh, and not with any special cooling.

Was that on a "pre-assembled, generic looking type PC " or on a branded   system. I'd be quite interested to know the motherboard and processor model, Duel Core or Core 2 Duo?, (bit of a difference).

Mother Gigabyte P35-DS3L
VGA Gigabyte 8500GT 512MB
Kingston 2*1GB DDRII 667
Chieftec SG-01B + 350W
Seagate 320GB SATAII
Processor Intel Pentium Duo E2160

it's assembled by the dude.
it's quite basic and cheap, it was less than 450 Euros. works fine and swift, sometimes i feel that it's as quick as my 2,4 at the comp.

The latest OCing I've done was to a Pentium 4. I was able to hit 3.4GHz with a crappy HP mobo and stock Intel HSF before it would shut off. Once I get my new rig up and running (E8400) I'm gonna shoot for 3.6GHz with a Zalman 9700.

I only overclock if my hardware is very old and I am planning on upgrading soon. That way if my hardware dies I was going to replace it anyway.

HA, got my new E4600 (2.4 Ghz C2D) to 3.0 Ghz stable and running cool. I might ratchet down to 2.6 and just leave it like that....now for my GPU...

I haven't overclocked in a long time, I haven't needed to.
I run Crysis at max settings on 1440x900 res on my Gateway P-6831FX with a Core 2 Duo 1.6GHz, 3GB RAM in Dual Channel, and a NVIDIA GeForce 8800m GTS.

The CPU is outdated but it hasn't held me back, yet.
