Obscure Musicians

Lately I've been listening to a lot of Hakim Bey, Bill Laswell, some stuff that Karsh Kale has done. I have all four Asana compilations, too. This all is a relatively recent acquisition. I hear Asana 1 and some of Hakim Bey's older works are highly sought after by collectors now, a surprise considering I was given the entire stack for less than five dollars.

I'm a big fan of Hakim Bey's album T.A.Z., a great album with awesome music underneath relatively entertaining speeches. The man is a great philosopher, even if I disagree with his "anarchic love" concept "amour fou", as well as most of his speech on the track "Immediatism." And his musical skills are absolutely wonderful.

I've also been listening to a lot of obscure UK acts, in particular Rogue Star has caught my ears now that I got their '02 single "Tags and Throw-Ups Vol. 1". Virus Syndicate is one of the few grime artists I can stand to listen to -- the other big one being Kano -- and I got their disc from Food4DaBrain. Neva Argue is my favorite track, looking forward to the next bit they put out. Also Warlock, a nice breakstep act from Rag & Bones (also in the UK), has been sitting on my playlist for awhile.

In the realm of the more heavy music, I found a really nice drone-doom band, Cicadashrine: wonderful stuff, if you're into drone. Fans of Sunn O))) and van Stijn's work in particular should check it out. Also recently got a hold of a single track by a band I was really interested in for the longest time, Autumndusk. Turns out they suck, oh well.

Lastly, I finally convinced myself to get DJ Uppercut's latest album, came with a complimentary Takagi Masakatsu promo so I'm happy. VERY weird shit but still quite nice, in particular the video clips are effective in how quickly they can make you "WTF."

Anyhow, I'm sure you don't care too much about the nobodies I listen to, so why don't you tell me some of the stranger and harder to find musicians you listen to? Who knows, we might share more than one common interest.

After a minute or two, I managed to hunt down my old AoD post (the search function there sucks testicles).

QuoteApparently I am the only person here with a shitty taste in music, so I'll keep the complaints a-coming.

Next up: Seventh, a fairly obscure Aussie band from Wagga Wagga, South Wales that I stumbled upon a while ago.  I don't know what's up with their site, but you can find most if not all their stuff here, where you're liable to notice that they've done a bit of genre-hopping during their time together.

Some choice picks o' mine :

They're certainly not THE BEST THING EVER ('course, my perception might be tinted by the fact that I'm not very big on metal) but I'm Gonna Fly makes me snicker every time I listen to it, and it sounds spiffy to boot.  I found out that they're the folks that did a good chunk of Operation Flashpoint's soundtrack.

// Mostly listen to 80s pop and other boring shit, so I probably don't know too many obscures.

Breathe

To Steely Ann:
80's pop has its own little gems. Sure, it's not all necessarily 80's, but it has the sound. Fairlight Children and Echo Image are the two I recommend, but there's plenty of others out there.

Might not be your bag but Jonathan Coulton is quite amusing - he's a bit of a geek and a pretty interesting guy so songs about flickr and such aren't uncommon. He did the end song for "Portal" called Still Alive.

Place to listen, Another

Perhaps Ill have a think about some more UK stuff seeing as I live there but nothing particular comes to mind at the moment :D

I am like Techno, House, Elektro and Bass.

(E.g. of musicians Alter Ego, Dirty South, etc.. )

Breathe

To ODDity, Lava Croft:
Sounds cool, I'll check both of those out on the 10th.

---

To NiTRoX:
Bass, as in Drum and Bass? I was a huge fan of Resonant Evil, Nu:Tone and Calyx until recently, although I think a nice Calyx track is still worth my time every so often.

Techno, house, what about trance? I'm not so big on techno or house myself, I'm more into the breaks scene (Adam Freeland is awesome) but I know a lot of trance. Plastic Angel and Kindzadza are my favorite "normal" trance acts; Aphid Moon, Shpongle and Ticon are my favorite "experimental" or "weird" trance artists.

---

To all:

What about metal? I'm a pretty big metal fan. I have every Devin Townsend/Strapping Young Lad album ever produced, and have been to a couple shows. I also like a lot of black metal (Paysage d'Hiver is my favorite Black Metal act) and symphonic/"gothic" stuff, with pre-Illumination Tristania and everything Aesma Daeva has ever touched topping that list.

Nope Bass as in trance-like music. I used to like trance but I got bored of it.

Steely Ann

While we're talking about lame stuff nobody else likes, anybody here fark around with Pandora?

NiTRoX

You calling electronic music lame ?

ODDity

Infected Mushroom is pretty techno'y and trance like. Dont think they're that obscure though.

Also Drum n Bass wise you could do worse than find some Moving Shadow / Omni Trio - they did some stuff for Grand Theft Auto a while back and i saw them live once - quite an evening I tell thee.

Infected mushroom = Goatrance (which is gay)

_Equilibrium_

Lately, I've been listening to a lot of lesser known hard rock bands such as Rev Theory and Submersed.

The line, "If I wanted your opinion I'd beat it out of you" comes to mind.  Anyway...

I don't really listen to anything truly "obscure", though most people may have only heard of some of the artists and not really know as much of their music (like Hackett-era Genesis, Rush, Yes.. most stuff from the 50s to the 70s, and very little from the 80s on to today).  I used to get a lot of "What the heck is that" from people, but those would be the ones raised on MTV (remember when they used to play these things called "Music Videos"?) who never listened to the large vinyl discs that their parents owned :>

@ Nitrox: You are now worse that tito used to be. Tito has become much better with his posts, while you have become exponentially worse.

...More of a metalhead myself and still love the good old stuff.

- White Zombie, (Rob Zombi was the man)
- Sepultura, Arize was a life changing album, as was Chaos AD.
- Pantera...the origionaql bad MOFO's
- Type O'negative for when I'm feeling wintery
- Voice of Destruction, A band that doesn't exist anymore, and good luck finding any online
- Slayer, skeletons of society was all I could really get into...great album.
- Gwar is always a laugh.
- Stabbing westward is a classic.
- Stiltskin, although I've only got a couple songs...like 2.
- Dark Tranquility...melodic sort of goth metal
- PRIMUS  - SUCKS, (actually thats not cool anymore, but Les Claypool is ALWAYS cool.
- Buckethead, - (gotta see him live before I die)

Some odd bands that my GF has got me into..
- Within Temptation, Breaking Benjamin, Lacuna coil. All sort of Evanescence like..Meh

My mainstream tastes are more of your common fair, Deftones, S.O.A.D, (Serj is up there with Chino) Audioslave, Godsmack, NIN, Maryilin Manson, (man I love Marylin), Disturbed, (David Draiman is an EPIC vocalist), Cyprus Hill for when I'm spaced, and I'v got a lot of respect for Justin Timberlake...he just flo's so smooth.

You let other people decide for you what you find obscure? Great of showing what a herd-animal you really are! Now take that route, since that's where all the others went too!

Kaleo

I'm sorry, but did you just call me a "Herd-Animal"?

Rabbitt

Back in my candy flipping days ( if you dont know dont ask ) I listened to tons of Infected Mushroom and Sphongle.

To all:
This may or may not be a necro, but having just got back from moving.. I don't have much of a choice, other than to make an entirely new topic.

I think everyone here can agree that would be A Bad Idea.

---

To Taiyo.uk:
TremRadio... I SHOULD listen to it sometime, I really really should.

---

To NiTRoX:
Never heard of it, maybe I'll look up the artists you mentioned. I'm expecting something like Nu-NRG or an offshoot of hard dance, going by names and "trance-like".

---

To Steely Ann:
Lame -music- nobody else likes. I'm not sure what that link is (I didn't click it), but from your post I gather that to some degree or another it's not music.

At all.

---

To NiTRoX:
Some of it can be pretty lame. Look at some of those terribly slow nuggets of shit that the dutch (and in the past 10 years or so, the diseased garbage can be found elsewhere too) put out and call trance.

---

To ODDity:
Your supposition that Infected Mushroom aren't exactly obscure would be correct. But as long as the music isn't blazingly mainstream, played on every radio station around the damn world, no problems should exist there. (Although I did in fact intend this to be for extremely hard to find music.)

As far as Moving Shadow and Omni Trio go, I listen to a lot of stuff from the Moving Shadow label, as I said I'm a fan of Calyx and Noisia, and Mayhem too to a much lesser degree. (For those in the know, no, I don't mean those semi-famous Norwegians, I mean a Drum and Bass producer.) For the record, I'm not sure how much stuff those guys put out on Moving Shadow. I've heard Omni Trio in mixes, but have nothing actually from them; maybe I should fix that.

---

To NiTRoX:
Goatrance is better than the pop-saturated bullshit that is eurotrance.

---

To _Equilibrium_:
I'll check them out after this post.

---

To NiTRoX:
If you don't care, vocalize it to your toilet, don't type it here.
To put it simply: we don't care if you care, assgiraffe.

---

To Rocicante:
Eh, I meant entire bands that are obscure and always have been. It seemed to me before this point that everyone knew at least one band that no one else had ever heard of.

Would it be too weird to thing that somewhere in the northeastern US, there's a girl with your name scrawled on a piece of paper and hung on a wall? 'Cause that's what I'm doing right now. You are the first person I have seen not to know of any "unknown" bands: congratulations.

---

To Kaleo:
You LOSE! But at the risk of derailing the topic, I'll totally say that Venom is better than Slayer.

---

To SoulAsasiN:
I have no comment on this list comprised of artists that have seen significant radio play, with the exception of two bands that I have never heard of.

---

To Kaleo:
I'll check them out after this post.

---

To Lava Croft:
I'll check those out along with the first one you mentioned after I'm finished with this post.

---

To Kaleo:
Only if you aren't from Finland.

For most of us, that's a yes.

---

To Lava Croft:
Nasty diarrhea, eh? What did you eat?

---

To Rabbitt:
I've never done any candy-flipping myself but Shpongle is always fun.

---

To all:
Dug into my music pile and came up with a hidden gem in the form of a band called Johnny Hollow. Wonderful stuff, sort of calming and orchestra oriented, lots of layered vocals. Personal suggestion: listen to Halfway to God.

Also an Australian band, long since split up, who only released one album that I could find. They made two videos, both available on Youtube. The band is called Insurge, definitely worth a listen.

Going to go and check out whatever you people dug up now, maybe a couple of the bands and/or artists you listen to will have a new fan.

Well, Moxy Fruvous is good, but they became a little more known.  And based on the general age of many here (and some previous discussions about music), I'm sure some of the artists I could name aren't known by others, but that's because their hits were 30-50 years ago :> (Joe Cocker, The Dave Clark Five, ELO, ELP, Focus, Grand Funk Railroad, The Grass Roots, The Hollies, The James Gang, Tommy James, .. I'll stop there instead of going through iTunes any more).
