[SOLVED] GUID Randomly Changed
« on: April 06, 2008, 03:05:29 pm »
I searched for anything on this and found nothing, so here goes.

Last night, during a scrimmage, I was randomly booted out of Tremulous. I got a message saying (sorry, I don't remember word for word) "Couldn't re-open data-1.1.0.pk3." I tried to start Trem again and got the common "Couldn't load GL Subsystem," or whatever that error is.

So I restarted my computer, which ended up working and I got back into the scrimmage. However, when I came in, it told me how Dracone was already taken by an admin. I couldn't get my name back. I asked if I had a GUID still and they said yeah. AA setleveled my old name down and reset me. I went to the NT server to see what was up.

Here's the weird part: I now have a TOTALLY different GUID, and I have not changed or editted anything at all in my folders recently. It just randomly generated a new GUID or something.

I could go around getting setleveled to 0 on my old GUID and reset on my new one, but it would help if I could get my old one back. Save me a good bit of trouble.

So, that's it. I'd appreciate any assistance.

As far as i know theres pretty much no way to get your exact guid back once it resets or you change it.
Ive heard of it resetting before but never really got a reason as to why it would do this.

Hopefully someone can prove me wrong here and tell you how to get it back but im not sure you can man.

Check the value of cl_guidserveruniq; make sure that it's the same as it was before (though it should always be '1' so your GUID can't be harvested on one server and used on another).  Failing that, have a look at the qkey file itself, and see if it's been changed recently; or try restoring a backup copy of it if you have one somewhere.

I've seen it happen where playing on a server with a different mod will swap the value of cl_guidserveruniq, and the next game played without a mod will have the wrong GUID until you restart the client.  But this one just sounds odd.. and I'll admit I'm nowhere near what one might call a Windows person.

Well, I don't use cl_guidserveruniq myself. I understand that I should, but I'm not one to fear that really. The value is still 0, like it has been.

Anyhow, a quick question: How do I know if the qkey has been changed recently? I don't know if there's something besides Notepad or Word that I'm supposed to open it up with, but with those all I get is a whole bunch of odd characters, and I don't understand that stuff. :P

Anyhow, I do not have a backup of it, I've never looked into the whole qkey and GUID files thing.

Not very accurate, but look at the file's timestamp; if it's somewhat recent, then it's probably been changed.  How, I couldn't tell ya :>

But unfortunately, it sounds like going around to any places that have you !setlevel'd is your only option.  If the file is changed somehow, there's no way to get back what it once was, nor a way to take your old GUID and create the file based on it.

"Couldn't re-open data-1.1.0.pk3."
That is what I would guess you should be looking into.  I would assume that the GUID change is a side effect of whatever caused that, and I assume its a problem you would need to find a windows person to fix.

I've already gotten re-setleveled at multiple servers now. I can finish that up, it's all good now, but thanks to everyone for the help. I'll back up my qkey and remember this stuff in case it happens again.

Happens to me all the time... My name belong to admins randomly and return to normal after a while...

Maybe just to copy the GUID sometimes to always have a backup for it would help ?!?

No. I have no idea if that's possible, I really doubt it is, but if it was, it would have been an AA member, and none of them would do that.

Anyhow, it doesn't matter anymore, I'm all cl_guidserveruniq-ified and good to go. I still don't think anybody would steal my GUID, since the only server I have high admin on is our own server, in which case rcon > them. I also have a little admin on PureTrem, not enough to cause real chaos but enough that I turned on guidserveruniq for the "sake of the server." (Garoth.) :P

I had the guid randomly changing before, about 3 times..........all I can say is it's no fun. =/

However since then I've kept 2 copies of my qkey floating around on my comp/flash drive, just in-case it happens again.

In summary........ Do what Lak said to do.

Can't you ask the people of that server to give you your old GUID.

If you want to hack the client to use a hard coded GUID then sure, but its easier to just reset it.
