New to server hosting

Yup, and believe it or not, I'm not writing in caps  ::)

Anyway, I got my little server running on Windows XP without any major hassle, found it on the internet server list, and figured out how to set myself as admin. However, I got 2 problems that I don't really know how to resolve:

1: Earlier I was using TJW's modified tremulous.exe, but before I did the server tutorial I made a clean new install of tremulous. Now, when I replace the original executable with TJW's tremulous will start loading, then I get the infamous "Tremulous.exe encountered a problem and had to be terminated" error, and it crash. Tried over and over, and this only happened with the modified .exe. Tried to download it again if it was broken but that didn't help either. And I do need the guid to set myself as admin so...  :-\

2: I can connect to my server online but not local. Anyone else who have seen this before?

Some help here would be most appreciated.

1) could you click on "more details" and post it here?
2) sounds like your firewall

After sending in the error report I got this from Microsoft. I have no Idea why this should be related to the soundcard or it's drivers.  ??? Maybe it tries to start with unsupported audio settings, but, I never had this problem before.

Indeed, my server does the same thing occasionally.  As mentioned, it's most likely your firewall, but another possibility is if you plug directly into a modem for your server's internet access as I am forced to do sometimes because of my crappy router.  If you do plug direct into a modem, this eliminates the typical local network, so simply add a router and then port forward to solve the problem.

But then, that only applies if you plug direct to modem.   ;)

Since I do not own a router, (only got one computer in this house) that makes sense. I was just worried about hosting at lanparties but that shouldn't be a problem then.

Just the strange crash problem left to overcome before I can get started then  :P

Hosting @ lanparties?? haha whats the specs on that machine, usually if you play off the same machine you encounter lag and if you use that machine.
Also most LAN parties provide servers.  Unless you are speaking of a small lan party with maybe at the most 5 to 10 people at your house.  idk.

But list specs please.  I am very concerned.  I am also sure it might fix your tiny problem you have.

Yes, hosting at lanparties. the specs are:

Amd Athlon 64 X2 5000+
Nvidia Geforce 7900GTX
Creative Xfi xtreme music  <- probably that one who causes problems right now
2gb RAM

And well, I don't go to lanparties larger than about 15 people. Even a really crappy computer can host that.

Oh yeah your right a crappy could has ONLY A LAN server but having other people join from different locations no.
But then again thats why it is call a "Lan Party" :)

Okay back to your problem, I will notify you if I have anything to fix.

Last I checked tremulous couldn't give a shit if its lan or not.
The network only effects the network, everything else is the same regardless of networking.

Thanks people, I think I will try and mess around with the sound drivers and see if that helps...

No. Let n00bs pick overly destructive Human weapons and then use them in their own base and around their own teammates. Maybe then they'll learn that doing that is a stupid idea. Meanwhile, I will be slashing at their damaged Armoury, after I vault their smoking turrets and the scattered bodies of their TK' d teammates. N00bs: they're what's for breakfast.

Yes it's pretty old.
Please read dates.

Actually, It showed up that some of the Windows files were corrupted and made it all crash for some stupid reason. After a little incident where the whole system messed up i had to re-format, and then it worked perfectly. Now it have passed a few months and I'm sitting at a lanparty again, but this time no servers will show up no matter if it's local or internet.  :P
