Freespace / Freespace 2
« on: April 25, 2008, 10:49:45 pm »
Ever since i've played freespace (a long time ago) i've fallen in love with it. Storyline is epic, including the in-mission change of objectives. Awesome music theme and atmosphere. I love the intros too.

You might not, but i love sci-fi games similar to FS/2.

What do you say? Comments would be nice. No flames/inadequate posts please.

Homeworld knockoff, or Freelancer wannabe?

Game looks kinda shiny, but unoriginal.  And seriously, if I hear that song (from trailer) posted on these forums again, I'm going to stab my ears out.  It's a great song, but getting waaaay overused.

neither, if you had to compare it to anything it would be something like the x-wing/tie fighter games.

It was released in 1998 (FS2). It precedes homeworld and freelancer. And i've played both.

Freespace is a mediocre game that got hyped too much. Much like Freelancer and Homeworld.

If you had read a bit more, you would have known that it got hyped too little: it had poor marketing, which led to it's failure.

Here's the intro for FS2 for those of you who want to see it: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=khIWdolT9xY

The thing that led to Freespace's failure is the fact that it's a rather shallow game, offering little new stuff. Much like Freelancer.

If you've played FS1 and 2, you'd see a great improvement. New ship classes, upgraded/new weapons, better graphics (to an extent), etc. How can you think that it is shallow?

I guess you just don't really like space sims. ^^

Descent rules Freespace.
Even if Freespace is really a 'part' of the descent series, no?
I'm probably wrong.

Got freespace 1(or 2, can't remember) with my old computer, on a DvD when games on DvD discs, and DvD's generally were new and high tech.
Have never experienced such an amount of crashes, I guess my DvD rom was outta date, since it ran smoothly, but crashed and hung every 10 seconds.

Hmmm, I was unaware that Freelancer got any hype whatsoever.  I found it in a $5 bargain bin at Game Stop a year or two ago. (I'd agree, it's combat system is fairly unoriginal.  However, the focal point of the game was the massive star systems you can roam, reputation with the various groups and the trade routes.  It's a trading game... combat is secondary.)

As for Homeworld, the Game of the Year award it got was definitely deserved.  Sierra pulled off a 3 dimensional RTS with an engaging storyline and great scenery.  I fail to see how that makes it "mediocre."  For a 9 year old game, it still kicks a lot of newer RTS's asses.

@Lava:  If you dislike the genre, just say so... don't pretend like you've played these games, or even researched them enough to have an opinion about them.

Ok what is the name of the song in the Freespace 1 trailer?
Everybody knows there's a party at the end of the world.

Just because I do not like two brainless arcade-spaceshooters, I'm not a fan of the genre? Both Freespace and Freelancer have a nice production value with high quality artwork and all, but the games are just dumb! No elaborate trading, way too little ships and weapons. It's just nothing special.

Now, I guess that if you belong to the somewhat more simple group of people who gets excited over the somewhat more mediocre games, then Freespace and Freelancer are for you. I would strongle suggest Freelancer tho, because it has the better atmosphere, somewhat that Freespace sadly lacks too.

PS: Don't ever call Freespace or Freelancer simulators. They are arcade shooters.

Mmmm, yeah.  I've had trouble figuring out what group to fit them into too.  I don't think arcade shooter does it tho.  Definitely not simulators.

To me it's almost a First Person Shooter thing but...

The song, Chess Guy, is "Requiem for a Dream Remix" by Clint Mansell.  It's been on my iTunes since roughly a week after it aired on the first Two Towers trailer, but I'm really getting sick of it, since everyone and there fucking dog uses it now.  It gets old, hearing it all the time.

I think that both FS1 and 2 have great atmosphere. But i most of all love FS for it's storyline and ingame story changes, such as instead of finding the target you were supposed to blow up, you find completely different things altogether. It makes the game less predictive, more innovative (i have not seen any other games that do it like this), and outright more fun.

Although freelancer was a good game, it was a bit shallow story-line wise. I heard microsoft hadn't finished it.

Homeworld had atmosphere all right. One of the best RTS's i've ever played.

Lava, whats your take on X3 Reunion? Apart from the bugs/glitches at release, that is.
