Goon Art
« on: May 17, 2008, 12:22:45 am »
Feedback please!

These are experimentative sketches of what the dragoon could look like with a more realistic style.

______ Cow meets alien

______ Alien meets another alien... not very cow like

Only heads so far. I don't really want to add anything till I've had feedback.

Plus any drawings of your own would be welcome (so long as they're good ;))

Good drawings, they're... interesting.  ;)

My drawing with a less realistic style...
____ Dretch meets low resolution black icon

edit: for those of you who don't get it (probably people using Macs), this is the default icon for Tremulous on Linux and Windows...

Sorry, I don't get the idea of realistic Aliens. Nice drawining nontheless.

Thanks =)

The idea is to give dragoons a 'make-over'. It won't necessarily make them more goon-like, it's more of an attempt to add details and shape changes while still keeping it recognizable as a goon.

When I said realistic I wasn't saying aliens are realistic :P I just mean that goons as they are would seem plastic and not very organic if copy and pasted onto a photo of some real world setting. This is an attempt at making something that would fit better on a photo.

So what I want is comments and suggestions about what looks more goon-like, or how it 'should' look but doesn't yet.

I understand, I was just trying to say I like the cartoony style better without actually saying it.

I don't mind you being frank with me ^^ I wouldn't think of these creations as 'true goons' anyway :P The true goon is right there in-game in all it's pointy glory.

Though, if it's cartoony you want..

_______ Dog meets chef hat... So it doesn't look much like a goon, it took half a minute to draw x)

By the way superpie, nice drawing ^^ it's more realistic than you think, all it needs is a higher resolution :P

EDIT: Better yet

You mean the one that took me the least time to draw? (yes the last one took me longer.. for some reason)

Geez, what's the point in putting effort into it then x(

you need to have in mind that goons pounce, they need some sort of head structure that protects/damages enemies when it hits.
nice drawings (i dont get the last one tho =P)

Well, I can tell the first image is a goon, but it doesn't seem quite right.

The second image doesn't remotely resemble a goon.

The "Moo!" image isn't bad, but it seems a little skinny and lanky.

Good point! I got wrapped up in making it look cow-like that it now looks like a lazy old cow which would look funny pouncing.

I was messing around with the last one >.>

The first might not seem right because of the changes I made (no nose horn, horizontal back neck, position of horns). Otherwise you might think the same as seeker that it wouldn't look right pouncing.

I'm aware the second doesn't look at all like a goon >.> it was a more radical change (You'll notice I stopped drawing early on, in case I was taking a bad direction).

Personally, I think the "Moo!" image IS bad xD but for whatever reason people are taking it seriously. Well It's good to have your comments even on that one =D

The second alien from the first post reminds me of the Predator a bit.
Interesting sketches overall, continue making them.  ;)

Your last sketch looks like an inverse of what a goon would probably look like in reality. When pouncing, it could utilize its hind legs, which would then need to be considerably oversized to provide enough leverage/muscle power in order to facilitate a long-range jump capability, which the dragoon definitely has. Hence, you could exchange the front pair of legs for the hind one. There is no reason for the front pair of legs to exhibit excessive signs of hypertrophy - after all, the goon doesn't use these to attack, it uses its jaws instead.

flying dragoon? :D

ok ok, it's just a dragon. I drew an image I saw online (not traced) because I suck at coming up with one myself and then painted over my pencilwork with my own color scheme. I can say the excruciatingly detailed background was my idea though. :)

here's the original: http://images.elfwood.com/art/j/i/jimmyj/chinese_dragon.jpg.rZd.128097.jpg

aaaaaaaaaaand, eclipse version!!!

I don't remember what filter I used in photoshop.

I guess OverFlow killed this thread by posting a drawing so Goon-like, that the other can only be less. Someone please make an even prettier drawing please! In shades of pink!

Looks like a stegosaurus
A Stegosaurus is considered to have a rather sleek head, instead of the bulky head as shown in the drawing.

That's a very good point drevo (and gives me ideas for future drawings) but:

1. Though it's not realistic, goons actually do have big front legs compared to the back.

2. This goon is a damn fat goon. He needs not jump! He needs only to stroll over to the nearest burger king.

EDIT:

It doesn't just look like a goon!
