Nux, don't smear those pencils.
for smearing, try using packaging paper and coal, what can be awesome when practicing enough.

and as you are "mixing" animals to achieve goon heads, try to think about the examples first, like a goon could be a crossing of a turtle with a manta as i imagine, or something like this. check skeletons.
and don'T draw with colors because you can't do as much shades!

ouchie...

i don't remember that much and i turned off pictures because my limited download issues.
anyway, straight contours mixed with blurry stuffs just don't match most of the time.

and when it comes to tablet, don't forget to use the pressure sensitivity (like Stannum :-) ). note that if you connect your tablet while PS is running, it will not recognize pressure settings, you need to restart - as far as i know. and if you make the sketch with searching lines, create a new layer and draw the next phase over that by reducing the original's opacity.

i don't wanna be smartass, i just sucked so hard with graphics that i know if i knew some things earlier i would've saved so much time that i could evolve much quicker.

Heh thanks for the pointers Opti ;) I personally like the way the shading is on that first one I did. It looks leathery like I wanted it too. The rough edges would be cleaned up if I were take it from a concept sketch level to something more.

Oh and pressure sensitivity is how I made the lighter shades :P

My habit at the moment is not sticking with one project, but I'll try to get back to this one soon enough >.>

Here's a little something:

_______ Something

Let's just pretend for a second it looks like a goon.

i recommend to take a look on Feng Zhu(?)'s drawing style as he is an expert and doing many solid concept arts for games.
his main concept is to make very rough sketches in small size and then to make a bigger photocopy of them to work on the details with transparent paper or by scanning it.
for drawing on dark background you should also check the good old frank miller, who is manually creating some cool images in this subject (actually he isn't as he is using ink but the 'rythm' of black and white is something that we can learn of) ... well on his lucky days.

for pressure sensitivity i am also thinking about the thickness of the lines, not only the opacity of them!

Rough sketch and detail over is very easily done with layers (in software). Use of layers can make things a helluvalot easier since you can change the contrast, brightness and such of only one level of detail. Look here for a good example of layer use.

Many different properties can be changed according to the pressure input. Not only opacity and size of brush but also colour, hardness, step etc.

idn if i told it earlier but if you are changing a layer's levels/contrast/Saturation/etc., always use effect layers from the layers menu! by hitting Alt and clicking on an effect layer it drives it to affect only the layer below. this Alt+click was hell a lot help for me and opened a new world in photoshop :-)
