Lan location in your neighborhood; Would you go?
« on: May 27, 2008, 01:35:15 am »
Basically, I'd just like some imput. If there was a LAN gaming center in your community, would you visit it?

There's no poll, because I want actual answers.. You know, a sentence saying if you would go to the location, and play games.. If you would, what games would you play? Counter Strike, Counter Strike: Source, World of Warcraft, Tremulous, Half Life 2, etc.?

No.

I play mostly free games, and my computer really sucks.

Hey! Half Life 2 doesn't suck :(
Even though half the people here pirated it.

Or he's saying Tremulous sucks... Which I doubt.

I go to this LAN place near my house, mainly to play CoD4. If there was one closer, I would go to it, provided it wasn't expensive or crappy.

Yeah, I know that, for the most part, those games suck. But their popular. Notice I said "If you would, what games would you play?" I was, in fact, asking for some input.

Kaleo and kozak, thank you.

Shall I be more specific about what I mean by "LAN gaming center"? There'd be computers and/or console systems provided for you. Games are provided as well. So, if you did go, what games would you want to see available on the computers or consoles?

I don't think I would, playing games online from the comfort of my home appeals more to me.

If I would go there, I'd want to play Warcraft 3 or Tremulous.

When we did have a LAN, I went there a few times.

I see it was a waste of money in retrospect. It's better to make your own LAN and invite friends over.

Nux, was it an hourly payment? Was the price too high, or was it just not fun enough?

WC3 and Trem, thanks nismo.

I would go, I use to when my dam computer died on me it was actually fun the price per hour was 2bucks (if you were a member, membership id was 5bucks) if you wernt a member price was 3bucks.

The thing i like most about it was listed below

.It was open 24/7 (it was packed more during 12am-6am than any other time/and it was a great place for me to relax at after getting off work from a late shift)
.The games were very easy to access and the lounge was great.
.You could rent a group of computers for friend gatherings ect..
.And they had a system for members where you could play with a debt meaning you'd collect debt, and as long as you could pay down to the sum of -20 you could still play.

.All the windows were taped with black tape so no light would come in and they had dark lights in some sections.(You want to get rid of the sense of time so they stay longer :) )
.Last but not least they had a great selection of energy drinks and snacks

Nux, was it an hourly payment? Was the price too high, or was it just not fun enough?
It sounds like a great idea best of luck to you, hope you start making some serious cash :)

So, Volt, your computer died? I assume that at your LAN center you'd have to bring your own computer? Would you have liked it better if there was the option to use computers that are already there? There'd be a vast game selection, and most likely a suggestion booth type place where you could ask for a new game ot be added to the list.
Thanks for your input, it was really helpful. Mind my asking some more questions? Good. ^_^

You said that the place was open 24/7, was it always staffed? If so, was it just at the canteen, or were there moderators (ADMINS >]) that'd walk around and make sure no one was being abusive. Was there an age limit?

So, Volt, your computer died? Its alive again thank god. I assume that at your LAN center you'd have to bring your own computer? If you wanted you could they had locations where you could run lan parties, but for the majority of the place its was a internet caffee. Would you have liked it better if there was the option to use computers that are already there? Very much so, and an optional game install. the computers there would boot up from a fresh install so anything that was installed would be quickly wiped out apoun soft reboot. There'd be a vast game selection, and most likely a suggestion booth type place where you could ask for a new game ot be added to the list.Thats not needed, i would just ask one of the staff members and it would usually be added within a few hours.
Thanks for your input, it was really helpful. Mind my asking some more questions? Good. ^_^Sure :)

You said that the place was open 24/7, was it always staffed? If so, was it just at the canteen, or were there moderators (ADMINS >]) that'd walk around and make sure no one was being abusive. Was there an age limit? They didnt have anyone walking around they had a cashier at front who had two pcs one that monitored computer usage (hours location whos logged on) and one that was a hive unit that could take control of pcs to fix problems., age limmit was 16 with id past 12am, younger kids were allowed to stay with parental consent meaning parents would have to sign a waiver saying that the kid wouldnt leave the location until he was picked up or given permission by parent to leave and if anything happen they'd have to pick kid up but you would rarely see these since kids wouldnt be there past 12am anyways. You'd only catch 16+ after 12am.

If you want i knew the owner of the place very well, I could get you contact information and the company that was sponsoring him, They provided him with computers and software to link computers ect.. games and stuff i think the deal they had was he'd give a certain percentage of his profits to them he said he paid off the computers and software within the first year of opening.

WC3 and Trem, thanks nismo.

I think, that are quite good games. Warcraft 3 really rocks on a LAN-Party.

i guess you didn'T check out the faces of tremulous gallery yet :-) imagine to sit in a room with creatures like that ^^

btw it would be interesting how would people treat deconners adn other destructive dudes :-) (hmm, thinking of camping i guess face to face playing could wear down your social endurance)

but as the only place where i played with random people on LAN was at the open days at my town's police station (doom and duke nukem, i don't know who's idea was that but ruled at 1995...), i could be wrong :-)

success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm

For some reason I don't see the point of holding a LAN party and playing WoW.
Most of the fun of a LAN party is playing with people in the same room as you. So playing an MMO on a LAN is pretty pointless, IMHO.

Deconners can't really do thier stuff at a LAN, as one major part of a deconners show is that their anonymity. They make up a name and make it infamous. Can't really do that in the same room, especially as they could just walk over and unplug the network cable. Also, there are a finite number of people to screen at a LAN party.

I'll play Tremulous anywhere if there's free cake and iced tea.
