Griefer Database
« on: June 11, 2006, 09:57:54 pm »
Hello. I think that there should be a griefer database that users could go to and post griefer information at. I know how to make this work with PHP, but sadly cannot afford hosting. If anyone were willing to help host me, then a griefer database could be set up.

Thanks in advance.

Main Problem is that griefers cannot be clearly identified as there is no player id system. You can only make a list of names that will change every day... :(

Still, it would be a repository for knowledge, but it would list names that seem common, and it would also list signs to look for in a griefer.

Of course, considering that the griefers favoring game is to use others names it will probably look like a database of the regular Trem players in the end.

we dont even have to constrain it to players, just make it a wiki for griefer knowledge, and famed griefers (nexter, d, wonko, etx)

Totally useless :
-Griefers can change their name
-Griefers can use the name of famous players
-Griefers can put a lot of s*** on the wiki, or can put false reports about others players.
-and more important....whats the point ? A griefer will mess your game before you even notice he is here. So what s the point of knowing all the common names of all the griefers ?

maybe if instead there was one for admins.. where also instead of name which is unreliable we could get ip's... and to keep it between admins only there can be logins for them so they can view it..

I think you've stumbled onto a D imposter there, I've played with/against D several times and have had no problems.

yeah, played with a D last night and he was a decent player.

Identifying griefers by name is useless unless you have somekind of central ID server, like Battlefield 2.

But it wouldn't work because anybody can get a new free ID for free anytime he wants ! That's the main problem to solve.

There are certain ways to change all of your ip but for reasons i shall not post how.The reason i refuse to post how is because it is easy for any griefer to find out.And dont PM me either asking.I played a game once where a guy deconned the human base and started saying rather unpleasant things like "Sex WITH THE OM QUICK!!"

He ruined 2 or 3 games and no1 could get rid of him,not even ban his ip cos there was no admins, the server was [EKS] T R E M U L O U S

Is the developers want to, it would not be hard to provide a secure authentication/identity tracking system.  A central server that only handled auth that all other servers could query wouldn't be a hard task.  One could steal all of the important bits from OpenSSH.

Cheers.

How can people be so blind ? It's a free game. Anybody can create an "account" is a quarter seconds.

Not really, If you want to. You can register on a free website, your free nick, to play this free game. No registration, no play. And If you are banned, your registatrion expire. And If your registration has less than 2 days, or 3 games, your can't enter server "Zecure". But I guest is a bad idea. Its not broken, dont fix.

Not sure exactly what you mean but, the "account" could be your ip and most recent name, or just your ip, then if one ip get's kicked/banned enough they are banned from all servers, petiotions to the admins via e-mail accepted incase of greifers kicking/banning good players. What do you think of that?

Banning by name is stupid since they can be changed at will. Also, griefers like to impersonate regular players. Would you like to be banned from all servers because some griefer decided to use your name as cover ?

And IPs can be changed too if you aren't with a static IP yet. That and when legitimate players aren't on a static IP either, they might end up with the banned IP.

And petitioning admins for the right to get back on a server because you have been kicked by voting too often means either that you do not diserve that or that the voting system sucks.

There is no way to force players to use TJW's client with CL GUID, is there? Timbo, please include his code in the next release of Tremulous.

Yuck ! I've read that link and now I remember ! It was the annoying buggy thing in W:ET which would sometimes prevent me from playing anygame of ET withtout a valid reason ! If it's the same, I doubt it'll work correctly :)

I see that the cl_guid can be generated from some user controled data. It would be a very good idea to add in the interface some way for the user to decide himself what is that data. It'll be like a secret login password that you can move from computer to computer if you want.

Hehe, well, I am sure Tony takes any suggestions seriously, Stof :)

His code (apart from fixing the quake engine buffer overflow in COM_StripExtension) creates a 2kb file called qkey, which stores your GUID and you should be able to copy it to any computer you want.

I've been using it without problems so far.
