Newbie question: Filter in-game messages?
« on: July 14, 2008, 04:42:35 am »
[Hi,
I'm quite new at the game. Enjoying it very much so far.

I am having trouble missing people's in-game messages addressed to me cause of the rapid flow of kill-messages on heavily populated maps. I'd like to not miss anything important said to me, especially if I am doing something wrong, building, feeding or whatever.

Is there a way to filter the in-game messages down to a bare minimum. I'd especially say that messages like "Player A was killed by Player B" are pretty useless to me.

Cheers

The only way I know of to remove a message is to edit your client executeable, because I think the server creates the messages and not your game. You have to compile your own using this code snippet (you have to edit it to filter the kill messages instead though): http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=2523.0 --but I'm sure I or someone else can put one together for you as well if you don't know how :)

You can always check what has been said before by pressing the tilde key "`" "~", they key thats right before the number 1 key on your keyboard (=O), it will open a game console where you can scroll to see previous messages and enter magic commands =D

Edit: thanks kevlarman

technically that's a backtick, tilde is "~", but they share the same key.

Tremulous needs a cvar like Quake2's msg. That way you could filter out kill messages related to opponents.

You can scroll up and down in the console with "pgup" and "pgdn" or with your mousewheel. But i don't know if this works with the standard client, the tjw client works fine here.

Would be nice if <end> worked...

If the friendly chums on the server I play had not explained it the first few times I had to read through console, I'd prolly been burning that keyboard in a hellish fire of molten lava.

Thanks all for the suggestions.

I know about "~" and scrolling up/down in the console. I guess my problem is that I have to focus 100% of my attention on the game (trying to stay alive!) so reading the messages flickering by is difficult.

As a workaround you can color your name a bit to create an eyecatcher.
Example: SonOfJon
This will make it easier for you to recognize messages in chat that were adressed to you.

If you turn up cg_consoleLatency messages will stick around for a bit longer on-screen.
