Um i dont know whether this belongs in feedback or not so ill just put it here.
I think that the lighting in tremulous should be kept dark and the aliens given night vision. This would make it a lot like movie combat but would increase reliance on auto defenses by humans.

So what do you guys think?

Maybe not nightvision, but possibly something like the Aliens in AvP, where your opponents had outlines

I agree some form of assisted vision. Right now to get a good game i put the brightness at 100%. I was just thinking if everybody does this then the atmosphere of the maps gets destroyed.

Um.. fyi, Tremulous has no lighting.
Can't find where I read it, but it was noted somewhere that lighting is a bad concept to use for advantage/disadvantage in multiplayer games, due to easy workarounds which would give certain players an advantage. I think Jex said it..

When I say "no lighting" I mean no ray-casted lighting, textures just all have a certain brightness. A marauder standing in a dark corner will still look just as bright, and will in fact be easier to shoot due to his contrast with his environment.

Likewise a human standing in a room with no light would still glow the same color as he did before when there was light.

That is all.

Not sure where you heard the bit about Trem having no lighting but it isn't true. The lighting in the maps is reflected on the players models.

The part about lighting making a poor gameplay element is true. We probably should have made most of the maps a fair bit brighter because I myself have to raise gamma to 1.25 and 1.5 on certain maps.

Ah, well, I dunno then.
You can just turn brightness up to get the same effect as being an alien with nightvision.

He does have a point though on how lighting seems to affect models. i've seen aliens trying to hide in pitch black areas and showing up like they were standing next to a light source. I use default Gamma for playing.

Ive suggested once before that aliens/human armors should get some neat-o screen overlays or somthing similar depending on who they are.

For instance, the dretch has a wider field of view.  But why dont any other aliens have "different" FOV's compaired to humans (or other aliens)?  After all, most of the aliens do in fact have eyes on the sides of the head and not infront of the head like humans do.  Also, I mentioned before on how it would be neat if everything the aliens saw had a blueish tint (or somthing similar) to it, seeing as they wouldnt have normal human eyes.  Its just an immersion thing.

Also, i suggested that a helmit could have more of a "FOV blocking" effect to it (such as, you can see the sides of the helmit on your HUD), making it so having no helmit at all isnt nessicarily completly dis-advantagious, as you will have more view of the battlefield.

Similarly to the Bsuit.  Seeing as the Bsuit is just a camera for the head, why do they have completly normal FOV and vision when you equip one?

It would be awsome if when you had a Bsuit you would have a camera-effect go over the HUD, and mabey a smaller FOV to go with it.

Theres stuff that looks cool but its not cool. Lighting is one. Giganteous hud artifacts are another.

On a singleplayer game is different stuff. Because you control the experience much more. And theres not playerS invalance. You can play a singleplayer game with 10FPS and a horrible hud, and no one will care. On a DM game everyebody will setup graphics quality to lower levels, to get 60FPS and disable the giganteous hud. Why fight this?. Maybe the player is right, and this stuff dont really fit a multiplayer game.

I think lighting is a gaddget for fun that dont work in-game. Tremulous setup is correct and shadows are not to hidden players. But Its OK to hidde somewhat eggs, because killing eggs is somewhat a singleplayer experience (PvM alike), while killing foes is PvP.

up keep with banning and dubbing things illegal so much so a q2 engine mod was created seperate but to enhance the game and moreless kinda solve the lighting dispute..sorta so yeah hell your dretches and marauders may as well have CELL shading  cuz lightings alot of work pandoras box.. of eyecandy we aint gonna see here unfortunetly.

I agree with this assesment. The "nightvision" where your view turns all green and you can sortof see but not really is not the right idea for the aliens, altho maybe the humans.

Maybe if it was more like a heat detection thing, like anything living glows red or something when this mode is activated.

I'd like the other aliens to have non-standard FOVs like the dretch has, as it does give a nice 3d effect to your view of the world.

I agree, lighting is bad. Once you start adding that, people will start finding ways to make thier displays more towards their favor. It could range from simple commands to 3rd party gamma ramping ( Gloom is a fine example ). Besides, the only alien classes at the moment that could benefit from dark lighting is.. advanced goons. ( Dretches are ORANGE, Basilisk is PINK, Marauder is WHITE(lol whiteskins)/RED, Goon is Blue/Random shade of PURPLE, and Tyrant is Gray/Grey. )

IMO lighting would make finding some alien structures impossible ( some trappers are hard as hell to see as it is, when placed right )
