Texturing Ideas?

I had a couple of questions for you veteran mappers out there about good textures to use.

First-

I have a VERY large room as one of the main areas of my map. The problem is that I want to texture it with something that looks good when your looking at it from far away and up close. Most textures, when I put them at normal size, form a grid of the same thing repeated, which looks bad from far away. But, if I make them bigger, then there blurry when you get up close to them. I'm looking for a texture that looks good from far away and up close.

Second-

Any suggestions for a hallway texture? I kind of want an ornate look, I have tiled floor with carpet. What would look good on the walls?

It doesn't matter to me if the textures are from an external site or a stock map.

Second:

Carpet would fit well with wood textures if it fits your theme. (Thinking about "Dune". Getting those ornamental atreides wood panel textures would be hot)

First:

Don't use ONE texture for a big room! Look at how other maps made it work out.

Use different textures on one wall, like some grass on the bottom.  Some dirt in the middle, and then different colored dirt higher up.  Or you could use a really really big texture and it would look nice (like 4000X5000 pixels or bigger).  But that's way to big for a convent map.

Depending on function and design, the floors of large rooms are frequently divided into different sections. For example a factory floor could be split into gangways, storage areas, safety keep-out areas, areas for machinery, etc. Each area is often a different colour and divided by clear borders such as the ubiquitous black/yellow warning stripes. The stock tremulous textures as well as various third party texture sets include coloured base textures together with suiting trim (border) textures.

Very large textures require very large amounts of video RAM. A 4000x5000 texture stored as RGBA would require ~80MB. This would exclude much of the community who do not own graphics hardware that can handle this.

Karith, Nexus6 and Niveus provide good examples of using multiple textures to cover large floors.
