any other alien models?
« on: September 11, 2008, 07:42:36 am »
I have the problem that i hate (and sometimes fear) spiders, is there a chance to modify
the alien models so that they dont look like insects or spiders?
only for my local client i mean.

cause i really like this, but the most maps are dark and if suddenly a big spider-looking thing
appears on my screen i often get frightened.

sorry for my bad english, i'm german and had english in school for only 3 years.

You could make an alternate pk3 that replaces the models, but you will be unable to play on pure servers (pure meaning that you can only use the assets that the server has while you're connected to it). Most of the internet servers are pure.

Omg, arachnophobia...
I know exactly how you feel :P

Just imagine the aliens as some cuddly nice creatures!

dretches:

marauder:

goon:

tyrant:

Additionally you can change some settings in ESC > Options >> System >> GFX Hardware and/or GFX Software. 'Brightness' will make the game look less dark, etc.

is there any chance to replace the pk3 without being banned/blocked by a server?

do you have such a pk3?

Nope, changing pk3's is counted as cheating.

Mathematically yes, you just have to replace it with another pk3 that has the same MD4 checksum (chance is 1:2128).

do you have such a pk3?
No.

cant i somehow make my client send the checksum of another (the original) pk3? and btw: its MD5, not MD4

Both MD4 and MD5 are used places, but neither for the pure check which uses something that fits in an int, not sure what though.
Using different data to what the server wants you to use is cheating.

you can put md5 into int. it will get a biiiiiiiiig number... but u can just use the first 10 digits, a wonderful checksum int.

why are there "pure" servers?

ok i now played a bit and i think it isnt really bad. i just make my screen brighter.
i sometimes saw many very small aliens, they were just like spiders, that was the problem, but i didn't see them this time, so it wasnt bad.

The servers are pure to stop cheaters.  Its no fun when people have changed it so they can see through walls, know your HP, and never miss.
r_gamma changes the brightness, it should be in the config thingy.

Well, technically it's a 32-bit hash of a 128-bit MD4 checksum.

If you feel better when you don't see the aliens, maybe you should turn your screen darker ::) Or you could wear
some peril sensitive sunglasses.

clearly you haven't noticed this happens on the pure servers too aswell as the unpure servers. having the server pure stops nothing pure is really just a waste expecially on a open source program its not like the server checks that the clients obey the pure checks. the only real way to stop cheaters is with admins who know what to look for.

How about conquering your fear by playing on the alien team - you get to hug the grangers.

"Locks keep honest people honest."  While the pure system might not be perfect, turning it off is akin to saying "Well, a lock never stops a thief, just leave the doors and windows open."

That sounds like some sort of geeky proposal.
