Hi there,

I have been playing Tremulous for quite a while now and now wanted to start using Tremulous with VOIP provided by Skype, but there seem to be some issues with that.

I use Mandriva in the One 2008 Version, which uses KDE before 4 (don't know the exact version, could look it up if it turns out to be important for this problem) on a laptop, the cheapest available headset ever (and I mean it!), Skype Version 2.0.0.72 and Tremulous with the TWJ-Backport and AFAIK no other modifications on my (i.e. client) side.

Okay, now the issues I have:
First of all I don't have any sound in Tremulous when using it with VOIP, but I guess that is okay and I could live with it if the other problems could be resolved.

The main problem is that after a short while in game I get a constant stream of the error message "Dropping sound", while VOIP usually continues to work.

Another problem, probably related to the beforementioned one is that when i want to shut down Tremulous (either using /quit or using the normal menu) while using VOIP simultaneously Tremulous just freezes and I have to restart/ctrl+alt+backspace (=killing the x-server) to resolve it. While Trem is frozen VOIP is still working.

Whenever I use Skype with the VOIP-feature I have to shut down Amarok completely before it works, but I guess thats normal, because Amarok otherwise "occupies" the channel used for VOIP...

Now, I am aware of this Thread (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=2177.0), but I don't have any problems with sound on any other device or in other programs, everything is working fine, including playing music over Amarok and playing Trem at the same time, so I very much doubt that it is a driver-related issue and I am too nooby to recompile Tremulous with the line in the sourcecode removed that does the output for the certain error message (plus, that doesn't solve the problem, just kills the consequences, and I would prefer an actual solution). Naturally I googled the problem, but I mostly found people having the same problem and not finding a solution for it.

BTW: I tested this with the Singleplayer-Version of the Quake-Engine as used in OpenArena and although I don't get the "Dropping Sound"-Message the sound doesn't work and it freezes on exit, so maybe this is a problem within the Quake-Engine?

So, is there anyone out there who can help me with the problem or has any idea on what the problem might be?

Thank you in advance,
BicycleRepairMan

What are you doing with Skype? If you want to talk to other players, try a VoIP-enabled client.

Hi,

okay, so you mean a client like the tremfusion one? OKay...but then how do I connect to people, how does it work? And: Will there not very likely be the same problem as now?

If you could post a link maybe to point me on the right direction I would be very thankful.

Cu all,

Skype was coded by retards and uses the really old oss, so can't be used with anything else that wants to make sounds.
Either make it use alsa (no idea if it can, try aoss too) or use something else.
In game VOIP only works on some servers that support it, get a more up-to-date client and instructions are in http://releases.mercenariesguild.net/client/mg-client-manual.txt
Any maps not in the MG repo?  Email me or come to irc.freenode.net/#mg.

Another client which supports VoIP is Tremfusion, get it here: http://www.tremfusion.net/trac/wiki/Releases
Installation instructions are here: http://www.tremfusion.net/trac/wiki/InstallationInstructions
Instructions to get VoIP working: http://www.tremfusion.net/trac/wiki/VoIPInstructions

Oh, cool, thank you both...and don't I know you from somewhere, Amanieu?

Well, cu on Porn-Serv XD,

P.S.: I will post the solution (if any other than suggested by you guys) here

Edit: Now that I looked at the links provided: I think you people from Tremfusion should maybe add instructions on your site, I mean, the page that actually has installation instructions on it is only for windows, the other one is empty...plus, if I knew how to use the .tar.bz-files I wouldn't have even come here...I guess I'm trying another client, which is kinda sad, since I really wanted to try yours, but I am too new to linux to be able to install this without any instructions...

The 'people from Tremulous' are not responsible for people who cannot operate their operating system.

Well, they DO have instructions for windows on their page...plus I was talking about the "people from TremFUSION" rather than the "people from Tremulous", and I think you actually should be a little more friendly to people coming here, especialy since your post didn't add any value at all to the thread.

Anyways, as I found out those .tar.bz-files are simply compressed folders, so I managed to install the Tremfusion-Client after (after installing the mercenaries-guild one my Tremulous didn't start any more, maybe that is a problem with the client, maybe it isn't, just saying^^) and, after a little tweaking, this solves my problem to a point where it is bearable. It seems like the Tremfusion-Client suppresses the constant stream of error messages (plus I have sound from time to time, but naturally have to turn it off so the others can actually hear me instead of my Tremulous sounds). One little problem persists anyhow, and that is, when the VOIP/Skype-thing crashes for some reason or somebody else ends the call, then Tremulous still freezes on exit, but that is nothing that can't be solved by CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE, so just don't have any unsaved important documents opened while trying this and you should be home-free!

Thank you to everybody who helped with this and the Tremfusion-crew for their client,
Cu on Trem then,
