Yet another noobie server problem
« on: October 31, 2008, 07:31:18 pm »
Hello,

I have followed http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=3586.0 to a tee.  I can run the normal tremulous program and create a server and play head to head over a LAN both through a router at home and through an ad-hoc network at work(we have 0 access to internet at work).

My goal is to play tremulous with the recent single player mod (possibly co-op) with my friend at work over an ad-hoc network connection.

Like I said I followed foobar's instructions twice, once at work and once at home.  Each time I crated a server and it had no error's that I could detect, but i could not see the server.

I tried set dedicated 2 and set dedicated 1 and never saw my server appear in the list no matter how long I waited after a refresh.

I am not a moron, but i can miss some things.  I was hoping someone had some usefull info about why I cannot see the server even from the same computer?

Please help, I desperately need to waste work time playing games.

Yep!

I tried to connect but I stare at the screen for about a minute before i hit esc and go back.  I used my static IP and I tried using port 32123 and also tried port 30720.

I tried all of these combinations on entirely seperate computers on  2 entirely seperate networks

I just tried to run TREMDED.exe on it's own and it locks up with a yellow screen.  Maybe it's supposed to do that if I run it without making it dedicated......

Are there any settings that would lock up TREMDED.EXE but not TREMULOUS.EXE?

I think he's saying the executable displays a yellow window. Remember to set dedicated to 1 or 2.

If I run tremded without the .bat file, it locks up in the yellow screen.  I have to ctrl-alt-del out.  This  is on windows xp.

I can run the original tremulous error free on both networks, setup a server, run a client and server off same computer and see the game in the list.

I just can't get tremded to work.

stare at the screen for about a minute before i hit esc and go back.

This was the screen that says 'awaiting connection' or something like that, and you can stare at the counter forever but nothing else happens.  This screen happened when I tried to connect through th static IP address,  Obviously something was not communicating.

I do get a yellow screen of death when I execute tremded by itself, I figured that was normal.

that's probably because tremded is really a client, you need to start it with +set dedicated 1 or +set dedicated 2 to keep it from trying to load ui (because it will fail)

Sorry it wasn't the OS that locked up, it was the tremded program.  there is a spot where the screen flashes yellow, but this time it was a long flash.

Excellent.  at least that part makes sense.  I wish the rest of my burdens made sense.

Thanks.

Er... ok, you're doing something wrong, starting with the way you start your server. If you have to, open a command prompt and run it that way if your batch file is screwy; don't forget to use +set dedicated 2 rather than a "normal" Windows shell command-line argument. Then, you should get a console that is its own window; look at it! I'll bet a hundred bucks to a doughnut that it is not loading a map. Try typing "map atcs" and see if that works for you. If you don't, then tremded will be running but not opening up a server because no map is being played.

Einstein,

You have lived up to your handle.

That is exactly what was wrong.  I was not aware that I had to start a map to see/ join the game.

Works good now!

Thanks everyone.

Now one last thing.  How do i help increase your Karma rating?

You have to get 75 posts before you can alter people's karma. Do not take this as an invitation to spam the hell out of the forum.

Heh, I'm always glad to help!

Honestly, I have been away from the Tremulous community for the better part of a year, and when I rejoined I saw the new board and its karma feature and had no idea why. (It certainly doesn't stop Lava and pl0x, now, does it? Haha.) Thanks for the compliment, though!

Seriously, froth, that was uncalled for and just plain dumb. I am actually subscribed to this thread in order to specifically help you and others, and stuff like that will quickly fill up my inbox....

Kevlar, explain the restrictions on that user group? Only a certain number of posts every 24 hours, or something?

I believe that usergroup has the following restrictions:
    • Can't access PMs
    • Can't access profile
    • Can only post
    • Can't start threads

So basically, has the privilege to spam all he wants but nothing else? Great encouragement.

Frothbeast, before you ragequit or complain loudly about how you feel you're being abused for some "harmless fun," please realize that the admins usually lift a user's "restricted" status after a week or two of good behavior.

This is just a temporary thing, and just be grateful that it was Kevlarman who found your spam first, and that he didn't ban you for it.  (Seriously, a few of the other moderators are, shall we say, unbalanced.)

That being said... SMITTEN, BITCH!  How's that -1 karma taste?  Muahahahaha!

Einstein: Not quite. Spamming while restricted generally results in being banned.

I would love to apologize without the extra post, but here it is anyways

I'm sorry.  I thought there was less tension here.  I didn't realize anyone would take that seriously.  I am not a raging dickwad, I am a newbie.  I have been on many forums, and my form humour is ususally accepted.  regardless of any of my excuses, you have my humblest of apologies, and I do appreciate the help I got.

Thanks.

The frothbeast.

No one ever called you a raging dickwad... You're one of the most polite newbies I've met so far. Would quite like to see you hanging around more.
