A question about the helmet
« on: November 07, 2008, 08:51:10 pm »
I hardly dare to post this question because I've made bad experiences before in this forum (although it was partly my own fault) and I fear that this will happen again this time, but as I read in the manual: "The Helmet improves the defense of the wearer’s head (..)" I wondered how the aliens can hit humans on the head by biting... is that, if they are as big as a Tyrant or, if for example a Dretch drops of the ceiling or is on the wall on the level of a humans head? Or are the spiked barbs of the Dragoon and the lightening attack of the Marauder meant?

Edit: Oh, I forgot: Or is it, if you jump up and bite at the same time?

I'm not perfectly sure if this is the question you're getting at, but I think you're asking, "Under what conditions can an alien bite a human in the head."

Now the thing with the aliens is that you hit where you're aiming on the human when you strike, generally, although the hitboxes in Tremulous are literally boxes so under certain conditions (being too close) you've gotta adjust more than that first statement would suggest.

So you can actually bite the human in the head from the ground with a dretch and anything above that (but this is obvious considering the size of the mara, goon, and rant). It is easier to headbite humans from higher ground though, especially from the walls.

There are lots of numbers out there for how light armor and a helmet decreases damage, but I won't go into that, and will simply say that it's enough to encourage that you buy it at S2 and even S3 whenever possible (if it goes better with the weapon than the battlesuit does) under just about every set of conditions. Also, know that there are no headshots for mara zap. And that advanced dragoon snipe damage is really weird but effective in any case.

Your post makes little sense, but I will do my best.

You can get a headshot by simply looking up at the human, since the actual range of the bite/slash/swipe/chomp/maul/whatever is larger than it looks like based on the visual model. The zap effect is reduced by the helmet, but it doesn't matter where it attacks: a headshot is equivalent to a body shot. The goon barb's damage is based on the location it hits, but this damage is reduced by the helmet.

Read the manual, play some games and experiment. You can easily find these things out by just *doing* them. The reason we seem so hostile is because you are asking the most basic of questions which are either answered elsewhere or become obvious as you actually play. By asking here, you ask us to take time to answer you, instead of you taking your own time to find out.

i think gilgalad is daring to ask newbie questions so she represents the newbies. 1.2 should be aware of theese problems to make an easily understandable game.

Allright, thank you all for your helpfulness!  :)
I know that it is partly my own fault that I got some rude answers in other posts but I experienced here that there are people who try to remain friendly and helpfully although my questions were rather stupid, either, but it would take certain other people less time, if they just would remain silent instead of writing stupid comments.
The problem is that I played Tremulous only in a local Network so far and the ones I played with were newbies too - it would have made little sense to ask them... ;)

P.S.: Gil-Galad is a male name ;)

Edit: And I don't think that it is logical to make a "headbite" just by looking up at the human - I mean: Most of the aliens are only half the size of humans (let alone dretches)..

Take a look at the tremwiki, there's a lot of useful information that's not covered in the manual. Many things in tremulous are not intutitive, e.g. the green spray of acid tubes is actually completely harmless, the humans are hurt based on the distance from the black tube.

What are you up to? Do you just want to insult me? It doesn't matter where my name comes from, if it isn't insulting anyone. As to you: Just hold your noise if you have nothing to say apart from inapt and offending comments.

I have to agree with him, Ellohir. That post was absolutely useless. Especially since many of the people here have "pre-used" names as well.

True. You'll find that aliens can generally hit things further than thier little limbs reach. For the moment this probably won't be changed since the attack range is being changed for 1.2 and will likely be tweaked a few more times before the game is 'finished'. If the 1.2 testing is successful, then we might see a change in models/animations (maybe even hitboxes) to suit it, but I can't be sure about that.

I deeply apologize. I am serious, that post was too offensive only because I'm a fan of the Tolkien character and don't like people taking it. But everyone is free to name as they wish, so sorry :/

BTW I also see a bit "strange" that dretches can headbite from the floor. There is no physicalw way the dretch model could harm the human in the face from that height. And I didn't even realised it until now...

It's possible to "fix" the ground headbite, but in doing so you make the dretch (and other aliens) intensely difficult to play. Without its range being what it is painsaws would walk all over them, they'd find it much harder if not impossible to attack from walls and ceilings, etc. From a gameplay perspective it just works out better like that.

Exactly. Without head-bite the game would very very unbalanced.
On the other hand, a lot of players (I'd bet more than 50%) do not know about this and keep jumping like maras to reach humans heads.
It would be nice to somehow make it look more possible for a dretch to beat a human head without jumping.

Stupid idea: To solve this, dretches could have some kind of extensible second jaws inside the mouth, like in the Alien movie:

Oh, and same for the PainSaw, the range doesn't make sense with what you see.

Since when is "Not very original" an insult?

When I call you an "asshole" that is an insult. Use a dictionary ffs.

The actual meaning of his (Galad's) post was that Ellohir should stop being a troll. Which he has done.
