Server hacking
« on: January 13, 2009, 10:24:18 am »
Hi guys, i am just visiting here to try and sort out a problem my clan server has with an =AoW= member.
Yesterday, at aprox' 18:05 UK time, =AoW= ing4ua was banned from our server for using a name hack, he then started to crash our servers continuosly.
We are [SPS], and many =AoW= members use our pad and time servers without any problems.  Any of you who know us, know we do not hack other servers, you will also know we have some top hackers in our clan. I would like this issue solved before there is a war, noone benefits from hacker war, everyone loses. Every clan has rogue members, we police our clan, and discipline any members who have hacked other clan servers.
As i said, this is a freindly visit to try and sort this out, we do not want to ban all =AoW= members, but we will to protect our servers.
Thanks guys.

Well, you might want to start posting in the correct area.

Also, what is a "Name hack"?

there is no correct area, because we don't care about how badly you fail at security.

I am sorry you feel that way, but it shows how inexperienced you are,,there is no such thing as 100% security.

Yes there is. Put it in a 200m thick lead box and send it into orbit around Pluto.

If you can get it out, I'll be fucking amazed.

Name-Hack?
Are you guys still using an exploitable qvm?
Go and get a recent one.
As for the rest, learn how to administrate or get lost.

Archangel is completely inexperienced.

He has lost every epic hacker war tremulous has had.

Ah yes, but lead is also the only substance that Superman cannot see through, and therefore the box must be made of lead.  We have no other choice.

Also, Pluto no longer exists.  It is a figment of your imagination.  You were perhaps referring to asteroid number 134340?

4 options:
He "hacked" something other than trem:  You fail at security.
He "hacked" trem:  You fail at security
He found a brand new bug:  You fail at basic common sense and didn't think before posting.
Or, more likely, No idea what "name hacks" are so its possible you're just nuts.

In Tremulous, maybe 0.1 percent of the population know how to do anything (devs, certain individuals)
And the only exploits possible at the moment are due to ancient QVMs or tremdeds (besides some sort of uber leet 0day). Therefore you apparently fail at upgrading when a patch is released. Or you could just have a password like 123, which wouldn't honestly surprise me. FuN server's rcon was FuN for almost 2 months.

The sport of the uber leet. You scan for trem servers on your laptop whilst driving around, sitting in mall parking lots, outside the hot chick you have your eye on's house, etc.  Then you hack da server with your super awesome super hacker abilities.  You am be like type 101101011 adn the server crash and you LIKE LOL NOOB! and you win hacker war.

This is obviously how visitor wins all his hacker wars.

I think what happened is that some =AoW= guy went to the server with "name binds", continuously kept renaming himself until the server over-flowed and crashed.
Just like what Caveman said, this shows that the server he went on should've put up a Qvm with a good ol' name change limit, so stuff like this won't happen.

Cheers.

Are admin rights coded in game? If that where the case, he could have used a modified version to name himself a mod, and then logged in with it, but its probably unlikely, because if they did have a built in staff system in trem, it probably would be server side.
As for the crashing, It could be DDS (distributed denial of service) but who has the time to do something of that scale to a lowly game server.

DDoS, not DDS. DDS is Doctor of Dental Surgery. I'm pretty sure sticking dentists to a server WON'T make it crash. But your Goons WILL have shiny teeth.  :dragoon: :dragoon:

Also, a DDoS is distributed, eg a lot of people doing the attacking.
Some idiot with a DSL line wouldn't be able to do anything to a server.
