What do you run Tremulous on?
« on: June 28, 2006, 12:01:16 am »
Just curious, what do you run Tremulous on? IE, Processor/Ram/HD Size/GFX Card

I run two different computers.
One:
450mhz, 192mb ram, 10gb HD, 32mb GFX Card.
Two:
700mhz, 512mb ram, 20gb HD, 32mb GFX Card.
know that I myself cannot do anything, that I will fall, and that I am a sinful man, but I know that I can do ANYTHING through God Almighty, whom strengthens me.

My main workstation is rigel.  It's a Sempron 2800+ (1.6GHz), 512MiB RAM, w/a GeForce4 Ti/4200.  It's running a tuned install of Slackware 10.1, soon to be upgraded to 10.2 when I get around to installing my new 160GB drive.  I love this machine.  It spends most of the time with the FPS railed, and never drops below 85, even when there's tons of action.

My other machine is yzceti.  It's an IBM Thinkpad w/ a 750MHz PIII, 128MiB RAM, a 20GB HDD and a Mach64 based video card.  The screen is locked at 1024x768, so Trem doesn't run well at all in fullscreen mode.  However, I primarily use the laptop for mapping, which it is fine for (particularly since I turn the texture quality down to flat shade in GtkRadiant--I do the final texturing and touch up work on rigel, which is more than capable).  yzceti is running Slackware 10.2 (rigel was upgraded from an older machine, and the old harddrive had 10.1 installed on it).

Some sort of crappy Emachine.

It's a cheap junky computer with an nVidia GeForce 4 MX.

It runs Tremulous reasonably well, so that's good enough for me.

FYI, you can get the stats by going into Start-Run-Dxdiag, then reading the Proccessor, Memory (Ram), then click on Display and read the Approx Total Memory, along with the "Name"

When I said "tuned Slackware 10.1", I meant it.  I'm running a 32bit OS (I'm going to install Slamd64 on the new hdd).  I'm running a custom compiled, stripped down 2.6.x kernel (this gives a huge performance boost on Linux systems, stock kernels are terrible).  I'm also running minimal background processes, and when I game, I use the game as my "window manager", in other words, I restart X to play a specific game, and _only_ run that game, which gives maximum resources to the game.

The only performance problems I have are from network lags, but that has nothing to do with renderer performance, and everything to do with the fact that AT&T and sonic.net suck giant donkey balls.

There's a reason I'm a Linux gamer.  You can tweak your system way beyond what MS will allow[1].

Jeff

[1] Yes.  I've heard about Gentoo.  I'm not interested.  Recompiling your kernel will give you most of the boost.  The rest isn't worth 3 days to recompile KDE.  Besides, when I install Slamd64, someone will have done it for me.

Sempron :( 2400*
1 gig RAM
Nv 5700VE 128MB Vid Card
Ubuntu Dapper
Rarely go below 70 FPS wise

*If anyone is chucking away a 32bit Athlon CPU...

*sigh* Quake 4 is laughably crap in lowest quality / lowest res.

Can run it on my desktop and laptop:

Desktop:
3.06 Ghz Pentium 4 HT
1 GB RAM
80 GB HDD
GeForce4 Ti 4600 (AGP 4X) 128 MB VRAM using glx drivers
Running Fedora Core 5

(quake 4 runs great on it, except the next to last level really takes a toll on the FPS ... so for other than that level I can run pretty good graphics settings ... not the best but good)

Laptop:
2.80 Ghz Pentium 4
1 GB RAM
60 GB HDD
GeForce4 420 Go 32 MB VRAM using glx drivers
Running Fedora Core 4 (due to BIOS - kernel problems ... maybe they fixed it I dunno)

Note to anyone that will buy me a computer: I will host your server for 3 months if you buy me a good, working computer or laptop. Or perhaps we can work out another deal :)

I get slowdown in large rooms, like the marine spawn on transit, and in general when there are a lot of people of screen. Otherwise, the performance is decent.

Mine is old but gooood although it doesnt look so good on paper.

Box:

P4 2.0 (northwood)
stock Dell 850e motherboard
512mb Samsung RDRAM (Rambus-PC800/400mhz)
nVidia GForce MX420 64 DDR SDRAM
40Gig 7200rpm HD

Peripherals:

Samsung SyncMaster 997df (19'' Monitor)
400W 2.1 Harman/Cardon speakers
Logitech MX510 Mouse
Dell UltraQuite Keyboard
Ashtray (didn't come with the box)

Rambus RAM does wonders my friends. If it wasn't for that, this thing would have been dead 3 years ago. Too bad it didn't get popular enough and DDR3 took over, for a lot less dinero.

Performance tweaked XP Pro (ain't that bad once u get to know it/tweak it)
Yelling at team mates since 2006!
