I've noticed a lot of...for lack of a better word,
noobs...posting here and immediately getting flamed to a charcoal-like substance. It pains me to see this, which is why I thought I'd create a quick guide to outline the
de facto expectations for members.
Posting- Always, always use proper spelling and grammar — this cannot be overemphasized. If you don't, various people (including myself) will viciously taunt you until the cows come home.
- Decent punctuation is good, but generally not vital.
- Overuse of smilies is
frowned pissed upon. - Use the search tool before posting. It should be located near the top of the screen. If you don't find anything but it seems like the topic would have been previously discussed, make sure to mention you at least tried to search. This should eliminate flames from all but the most diehard noobsmackers.
- Post enough information for us to help you — for example, if you have a graphics-related problem, post your operating system, video card model, and Tremulous client. And possibly more, depending on the problem.
- Do not, however, overwhelm us. You're writing a message, not an essay. If you really must write a lot, include a "tl;dr" ("too long; didn't read") section at the end for lazy people like me. I.E. a summary.
- Cross-posting (creating a duplicate thread in more than one category) is bad.
- Don't post personal information. You never know when someone's a rapist in real life. Maybe I'm a rapist, muahahahaha.
Other- If you're about to register, please God do not choose a stupid username. I think you're a fairly good judge of what "stupid" is and is not.
- People really hate looking at obnoxious signatures. Just something to think about.
- Don't be stupid. (You'd think this would go without saying, but...)
I doubt anyone's actually going to
read this, but it usually doesn't hurt to try.
