Hmm...I think most of them should be local, but sounds like "Base is under attack!" is much more useful when all can hear it. Or maybe there could be option to just shout so it's local or use radio so all hear it.

I disagree strongly. This game is about communication far more than it is about killing. Mind you, communication != talking, but still.

What would be CRAZY cool would be if every player had an own voice. Hard to do tho (not impossible, but hard).

Anyways, Jorgus had another idea about accessing the commands: make them shortcut-assignable to the numpad or something, with sane defaults. I think that would complement the idea of menus just fine. Note menuS in the plural (as suggested a couple of posts before: Defensive Menu, Offensive Menu, Building Menu, Fun Menu) as deep menu structures make it hard to access the desired voice command quickly.

1. You missed my ";)"
2. Exactly, communication != talking
3. ;)

Just to make clear my previous comment: What I meant is that Tremulous is about winning by teamwork and killing the enemy and not by standing in a corridor typing some bullshit and getting yourself killed because of that.
To help this we have opened our Teamspeak Server (data at www.tremulous.info) a while ago and dolby's radio commands will improve gameplay further, no doubt.

Can you make a sound which I can trigger which plays throughout the entire map at volume 2 and says "Follow Me You Thicks Bastards!"?

Tried that 3 or 4 times now and it was always empty (i.e., the people from the game weren't in there. Plus (that's my personal problem tho), when I use TS I can't hear any of the Tremulous sounds.

copy/paste some TacOps binds :

 You can see a list for Speechbinds here:
   What it says   Keybind
    Roger That   speech 0 1 0
    Negative   speech 0 3 0
    I Copy   speech 0 0 0
    You got it   speech 0 2 0
    Cover me   speech 2 3 -1
    Watch for Cover   speech 7 5 0
    I need some back-up fast   speech 7 4 0
    I got your back   speech 4 3 0
    I'm under heavy attack   speech 7 3 0
    Let's clean this place out   speech 2 2 -1
    Return to base   speech 2 0 -1
    Attack main target   speech 2 4 -1
    Emergency!   speech 7 0 0
    Emergency! Man Down!   speech 4 5 0
    Fire in the Hole!   speech 4 2 0
    I'll Keep them busy   speech 6 3 0
    Stay together team   speech 5 5 0
    Hold this position   speech 2 1 -1
    I'm In Position   speech 6 5 0
    I'm Hit!   speech 9 2 0
    Watch Who You Shoot!   speech 1 1 0
    Hey! Friendly Fire!   speech 1 0 0
    Bomb Has Been Planted   speech 4 1 0
    Falling Back   speech 7 1 0
    Enemy Spotted   speech 6 2 0
    Target In Sight   speech 6 8 0
    Split In Pairs   speech 5 4 0
    Meet At Rendez-Vous Point   speech 5 3 0
    Keep Moving   speech 5 2 0
    I'm Going In   speech 6 4 0
    Objective Accomplished   speech 6 7 0
    Hostage Rescued   speech 4 0 0
    5 Seconds Before Assault   speech 5 0 0
    Area Cleared   speech 6 0 0
    Enemy Down   speech 3 0 0
    Get In Position   speech 5 1 0

especially Keep Moving  and FFire voices are nice

and about hearing other team, humans could hear current alien sounds (for example if dretch is speaking humans would hear a cricket sound), aliens could hear a giberish taunts, or squelch sound ("hszszszszszsz piiip") for anything not directed at them

OMG! Too many! Too complicated! Who can remember?
I was thinking of putting the most common phrases each
on a single key of the keypad. That's 17 (seventeen)
keys! And if that's not yet enough then there would still
be the menu to choose from using accelerators.

and who has to remember? its not like u are going to use them all. I used only 6 essential ones while playing TacOps. Rest of the stuff you can choose from the fast menu (UT99 ROX) or just type.

Uh. Where's the point in having to press THREE keys for a speech command? I mean, there's 18 perfectly working keys sitting on the numpad of which only one has to be pressed :-)

The point is to allow you to choose commands from a menu, and to allow the use of more than 18 different voice commands.

If each number key was bound to a voice command and there was no menu, you'd just have to hit number keys until you found the voice command you really wanted, and hope other people would ignore the voice commands you didn't really mean.  It would be noisy, confusing, and inefficient.

The solution would be to make a confirm-double tap.
That's when you press the key to see the message, then press again to send it.
This is not really time consuming because you can just double tap the key really fast if you already know what message it is.
OR, there could be an option in the menu to make em single tap.

Here's my idea: either ppl can record their own sounds (or download a Basic Set) that they can put into a specific folder of trem for specific buttons(might start up a little lagging sometimes), or if they have a microphone, they could press a specific "Speak" button in-game to audio-chat their very own words at the very time they want to say whetever they wanna say.

and if you haven't got a mike?
don't ask me, i come with specific ideas, not  specific solutions!

I think that unless you want to bind as many keys as there are commands, that a menu will be necessary.  However, once again there could be the problem of being killed while navigating the menu.  Unless you quickly got proficient and memorized the keys for each emote (which wouldn't necessary take a long of time) you could easily be killed if not somewhere safe.

I still think the, for example, V -> 1 -> 3, or V -> 3 -> 1 (and then there would be a voice command) menu would be a good idea, it's easy to understand, flexible because you can use it in combat, and the menu is easy to use.

Ya allright. that would probably be the best awnser.
They had that in Unreal Tournament... The problem was you had to use the mouse while holding down V... that wasn't very practical in battle.
 :)

 :eek:  But i still think the microphone-chat would be nice.

Voice commands--Great Idea!  I think only the basic commands should be addressed first.  Some funny ones would be appreciated as well...though it will get annoying when all the 10 year get up and dance on their keyboards.  Some sort of limiting factor should be put on to control the number of times you can press a command in a certain amount of time.

Also, I don't believe anyone has mentioned the important commands:
Enemy Reactor is down!
Enemy Defenses are down!
Enemy is starting a new base location!

Three of the most important commands i'd say.  There have been many times I sat and typed the same thing for 30 seconds trying to get some teamattes to take out a decripit base or stop a single enemy builder from starting a base...

Location, Location, Location!

Its all about location!

For instance

I need Backup , Aliens are Attacking!

Is'nt very usefull.

Whereas:

I need Backup at The Loading Dock, Aliens are Attacking!

Is.

Also Day of defeat had these nifty %h %c and other %Insert_variable_in_chat% commands. Do that for voice chat too;

I'm defending the base, I've got 83 health left.

I love voice commands.. so here are my suggestions because this would be awesome!

Please dear god don't map everything exclusively to the numpad or something. If you think about the way that your hand falls on the keyboard that would mean you'd have to move your hand around.. also don't use the mouse at all for it... I'd suggest something like what tribes had...
You press V to open up a menu that looks something like:

G-General/All
T-Team
A-Animation (this might be the taunt, or other taunts with animations maybe..)

And then the menus are nested.
So V then T would open up another menu
that would have something like:

O-Offence
++A-Attack!!
++W-Wait for my signal.
++R-Retreat!
++G-Grenade!

D-Defence
++E-Enemy is coming
++B+Build
++++S-Build more spawns
++++G-Build Generator/Overmind
++A-Our base is under attack!
++E-Enemy is coming!
++D-Defend our base!

G-General
++G-Good Game
++T-Thanks!
++M-MOVE!
++Q-Quiet!
++S-Stop
++G-Go

Some things to note!

The binds will be really fast once you  know them.. BECAUSE YOU DO NOT HAVE TO MOVE YOUR HANDS TO NEW KEYS!.. Your left hand on the default movement keys can easily reach each bind key. So you can type 4/5 letters with your left hand quickly and get right back into what you were doing without having to move your hand. it doesn't take long at all to learn your most common ones, and once you get good at it you can pound out a voice command  so fast that you don't have to really stop what your doing.

The binds are also general... They map the same for both alien and humans.. there isn't more in one than there is in the other.. this makes it easier to switch and say the same thing with either group.. Keeping it ambiguous also helps it apply to different things.....
Also keep them short.. you don't want them all overlapping when people are putting them in.. it will be chaotic.. .. this is also VERY IMPORTANT to have some kind of LIMIT to the number of these someone can do in a row.. there is nothing like some jackass saying MOVE 100000 times and driving the whole team nuts because someone is standing in front of them...
Keeping the more detailed commands in longer binds and the more common ones in lower binds is good....... just don't go NUTS with what they can say try to have general ones.. this isn't a full replacement for actually talking in game for specific instances.

This would be such a great enhancement if done right!

Wouldent that hinder you whilst your in combat, i think using the numbers 1-9 (not on your keypad, but above the letters) in combination with the V menu would be a good idea, this way, you can still use it in combat, and its easy to use, but if the tribes system will be chosen, i will not protest, that system is good as well, but maybe im not so experienced with it, but i'll learn if its needed  :) .

To all guys who keep speaking about the #@$! numpad : Some people aren t using arrows so their hand is far from numpad, and some people play on laptops WITHOUT numpad.

So lets make a system that allows people to bind their speach commands the way that please them.

Dont think of ways to bind the voice commands as if everyone will use numpad. Stop considering everyone will have 18 keys available. :evil:
