Will a Internet Server work with a old IBM T23 laptop?
« on: August 18, 2009, 01:55:53 am »
Hello,
I was wondering wether or not setting up a server from my old IBM T23 laptop would work? it has a modem with it. Here are some of its specs:
~~~
IBM T23
Year 2001
756MB RAM
1.13GhZ CPU
16MB VRAM
~~~
I would also be setting this server up on my ubuntu OS. Thanks!

756MB RAM
Did you mean 752MB RAM (256MB + 512MB - 16MB video)?

The minimum requirements for running an average server are a bit lower than for playing and, with the exception of the graphics (not used by tremded), you can play Tremulous on that.
In general, running a server (or anything, for that matter) on a laptop for an extended period of time may not be a good idea. Also, if you want a decent server, make sure you have a consistent internet connection with sufficient bandwidth.

Ya i meant 752MB Ram. Anyways, thanks for your reply. I tried setting up a server ( the same way i did on my more powerful Alienware), and still, i could'nt find my server on the master list from another computer. here's the output:

What have i done wrong? I did the exact same thing on my Alienware, and it worked fine, but not on my older laptop :(. Any ideas? Thanks!

Your output looks fine.  But when you create a server and try to connect to it from the same ip, sometimes tremulous doesn't like it.  So try to add your server to your favorites list by manually adding the ip and port.

I think if your connecting from the same network, this should work. (correct me if I'm wrong)
Code: [Select]
127.0.1.1:30720
If you aren't connecting from the same network, or the above didn't work, replace your private ip (127.0.1.1) with your public ip (goto http://whatismyip.com) but keep the ":30720" at the end.  The 30720 is specifying which port your using incase your wondering.

Good luck,
Kiwi

If by "modem" you mean one of those old things from the AOL/Compuserve era, then it will only be sufficient for very few connected clients.

Thanks for replies,
I did exactly what kiwi said, and still, i can only connect to my own server from the same computer i am hosting the server on by typing:
Code: [Select]
./tremulous.x86 +connect 127.0.1.1:30720And then i tried my brother from across the country to find it in the server list, and he couldn't find it either.  I went on whatismyip.com, and found my ip address (75.175.59.247), and i found the default port (30720), and i told my brother to pull down the console and type:
Code: [Select]
connect 75.175.59.247:30720And he still couldn't connect to it. Am i forgetting something? Thanks!

Also, put up your server for 30 min then look here and see if you see it.  If it isn't on that list then it isn't on the internet.  If that is the case add +dedicated 2 to your start up command for starting your server.  If dedicated is 1, it will only be a lan server.  So the command you use to start your server should look something like this:
Code: [Select]
sudo ./tremded +set dedicated 2 +exec server.cfg +set net_port 30720

Thanks Kiwi for your reply,
I did what you said, and still, i cant find my server on that list even after 1 hour. Is it because my computer is 'crap', or is it because i'm doing something really wrong.
Thanks!
Update: Do i have to run 'sudo?'

Did you forward the port used by tremulous in your router?

I have no router. Just a laptop with a wifi card.

sigh, NO, don't use sudo. there's no point in elevating it to high permissions. now he's going to have to rm all of his .tremulous directory and start fresh since it's all root owned and shit now.

Your problem is re: your router or maybe because of your NAT settings.

router configuration page -> port forwarding

local address is the address of your laptop i.e. 192.168.1.101, port would be 30720

hit apply or save or whatever, should be A-OK. if it doesn't work, paste your router make and model please.

yeah, but that kid's a moron, so, makes sense : P

netgear routers have notoriously bad NAT handling. you may just be out of luck. :(
