Good bye Geocities
« on: October 27, 2009, 03:00:30 am »
So geocities is shutting down today. What does this mean? Well no more of those UNDER CONSTRUCTION banners, midi loops, broken code (ok maybe not the end of all of that, but a lot) on webpages. If you don't know what geocities was you were probably born last year, but here is wikipedia to save the day. Geocities was the place where many people first tried their hands at designing and maintaining webpages, and of course, many people were very bad at it.

I just felt like taking the time to post here so that we could pay our respects (or not) to this venerable internet service, and possibly reminisce about the olden days.

If you're interested, XKCD's site was changed recentoly to commemorate the shutting down of geocities, and here it is. (Using a mirrored site because I figure XKCD's main page will change back by wednesday.)

Here are three articles on Geocities and it's closing which some of you may like to read:

Feel free to post here about any reactions, thoughts, memories or such that you may have about Geocities and its closing.
Good bye.

P.S. This thread best viewed in Netscape Navigator 4.7 or higher.

At times, when you didn't fear to put up ripped mp3s on public webspace - I owned myself some auto-generated accounts with an auto-generated winamp playlist with direct download links to the mp3s.

Ah, the good, old times before the lawyer fucks discovered the world wide tubes.
