<@Lakitu7> Those rhythmic beeping sounds in human base in both 1.1 and 1.2 are from the turrets
<@Lakitu7> I never knew that until like last month
<@Lakitu7> always thought it was reac
<FreaK|Matt1> lol
<Dracone> I always wondered what that was from.
<Dracone> There should be a post on the forums about it.
<Dracone> Right now.
<FreaK|Matt1> i thought it was rc too
<your_face> or repeater
<@Lakitu7> at least now it goes away when it's unpowered :)
<@Lakitu7> lots of buildables make idle sounds but the ret one is louder
<Dracone> Lakitu would look really good as the one on trem.net who posted "I found what making the beep noise!"
<your_face> lol
<+^Einstein> ;)
<@Lakitu7> Well at least everyone else thought it was rc too and I'm not the only one :)

That'd be a good start. It's probably one of the first things that most people will notice that have changed in 1.2, and probably one of the most annoying. It's way too loud for one thing, and just sounds too clear and fake.

Lakitu7

Apparently the spinup sounds a lot worse in openAL than it does for others, for some reason? That's what I'm told, at least.

Hendrich

So, the turrets make the noise? Why? To create the atmosphere? To let the aliens know there are turrets? Because its cool? To hide the fact that theres no music?  And why the turrets?

I guess it's fair, because the aliens have their own 'atmosheric' sounds, granted they can be considered less annoying but are ignorable. And sometimes I enjoy it, just relaxing in my base before another alien rush, me by my turret. Listening to the beeping, the swirling of the reactor, the occasional human changing his gear. Then the 1.2 turret sound kicks in like a punch to the balls, except its for my ears.

But we also have sounds like players spamming the taunt button, turrets making sounds when they're "spinning", Humans calling out "Come on!", beeping, screeching, roaring, shooting, jets flying, and the unexplainable fireworks.

Someone needs to create a song out of this.

I don't understand how you people only realize these things after years of playing (and bitching and moaning)

Feel free to contribute a better sounds. Remember that Trem is not a commercial game; devs are suing what they have.

Because turrets using sonar for detecting aliens :)

In this instance, it would be preferable if the developers didn't use what they have.

That spinup sound renders it impossible for me to play Tremulous with a proper audio setup. With the volume up just high enough for the 3d positional sound to work(7.1, 750wrms speakers), the second a few turrets spinup it deafens not only myself but half the street.

Why do people use openAL?
As far as I can see, it lowers your FPS, and doesn't add anything.
Any maps not in the MG repo?  Email me or come to irc.freenode.net/#mg.

It's the turrets? Wow, that explains so much  :D

The benefits are 3D sound w/doppler effects and the ability to use a microphone with VOIP.

Lucyball wooshing past you in close proximity is simply amazing with the doppler effect. Almost like a train on fire mounted on a rocket ;-O

Take a wild guess.

Paradox

For a long time, i played without openAL. But then some project i was working on, i cant remember, required it, so I installed it. Tremulous sound was instantly brought back to life.

This should be fixed now, as Paradox pointed out here

Then why didn't report it? You have a choice : You're either useless or you're lying. Most likely however, a useless liar.

Well, I suspect it too (different format with that sound). If you ask why I not reported it - because nobody wanted to know it. Atleast I not saw anywhere from developers (or maybe even from anyone) "we don't know why is too loud, someone help". I read only from users "that sound is too loud, or annoying" (even I posted that). So I was guessing that sound is intentionally loud.

danmal

Yeah, I always thought the devs wanted the sound to be that loud as well. I was quite surprised when someone made a post explaining why it was so loud.
